Almost three years ago, my longtime friend Kat Grider asked the Smiling Lions team (me + .pptx) to come work with ADT on a project. One brief led to another. Yesterday, we decided to put a ring on it. I’m joining ADT as VP, Brand Performance & Strategy. I’m excited for a lot of reasons. But mostly this one: there is a real opportunity to bring humanity and empathy to a category that has been too reliant on scaring people. That’s the work. In the coming weeks, you’ll see me posting positions here as we build out our brand strategy, creative studio, and social and partnership teams. In my experience, product and marketing don’t usually work this way. Live Light started as a concept out of brand strategy work. The seed was real feedback from first responders: it can be incredibly difficult to locate homes at night during an emergency. Houses look alike, numbers are small and often, weather interferes. Chris D'Alessandro and the team at VML took this insight and crafted a compelling film that helped us pitch this concept to the company. Then ADT’s product team did something a lot of product teams wouldn’t: they took an idea from marketing and partnered with us. They not only made it real, they made it remarkable. And it works. Live Light is a connected, illuminated version of our iconic yard sign. Already found in yards across the country as a symbol of protection, it now goes further: during an alarm event, it automatically illuminates as a beacon that helps first responders find the right home faster. Often, the simplest ideas are the hardest to make a reality. Not this time. I’m very excited to see where this product (and relationship) goes.
