Trusted Science for Safe Food
About us
Science, safe food, sustainability. EFSA is a decentralised agency of the European Union with headquarters in Parma, Italy. The agency was set up in 2002 following a series of food crises in the late 1990s to be a source of scientific opinions and advice on risks associated with the food chain. Our work forms the basis for the European policies and legislation in the food safety area. Our scientific remit covers: food and feed safety, nutrition, animal health and welfare, plant protection, plant health, and the possible impact of the food chain on the biodiversity of plant and animal habitats. EFSA employs around 565 staff members and works alongside over 1500 external experts. If you are interested in a career at EFSA and wish to contribute to food safety in Europe find more about our work and how to engage with EFSA here on LinkedIn or on our website. Disclaimer: We welcome your feedback but please be aware that we may not always be able to take part in discussions. Our experts have published a new scientific opinion focussing on acute exposure to glycerol (E 422) from beverages. We set an acute reference dose of 125 mg glycerol/kg body weight per drinking occasion and found that typical portions of slush ice drinks can exceed this level across age groups, with children most at risk. We recommend that risk managers consider setting numerical maximum levels for glycerol (E422) in beverages. 👉 Read the full scientific opinion: https://lnkd.in/ecjTi6tY #FoodSafety #FoodAdditives #ScienceForSafety #EFSA | EU Health and Food Safety

Research underpins good policy‑making – and EU agencies play a key role. The European Union Agencies Network on Scientific Advice (EU‑ANSA) has published a joint statement reaffirming the importance of research in supporting evidence‑based policy‑making. Drawing on lessons from recent crises such as COVID‑19, the statement highlights how EU agencies contribute across the research knowledge cycle – from identifying policy‑relevant knowledge gaps to supporting the uptake of research results in regulatory science and implementation. EU‑ANSA also underlines the value of inter‑ and transdisciplinary research, including within the One Health framework, and calls for the proactive involvement of EU agencies in future EU research programmes such as Horizon Europe 2028–2034. 👉 Read the statement: https://lnkd.in/d5Fa_zT4 #EvidenceBasedPolicy #Research #OneHealth #EUAgencies #ScienceForPolicy
