NCFL works to eradicate poverty through education solutions for families.
About us
The National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) works to eradicate poverty through education solutions for families. We believe education is a nonpartisan, shared responsibility. Partnering with educators, families, literacy advocates, and communities, we’ve worked for over 35 years to eradicate poverty through equitable solutions for families across multiple generations. With the right resources, care, and opportunities, together we can eliminate barriers to family wellbeing, create powerful learning experiences, and grow stronger communities. NCFL's vision is that by 2030, aligned and coordinated family learning systems are established in 60 communities, built with and for families, to increase education and economic outcomes, thereby creating thriving communities. Literacy isn’t just reading and writing. It has multiple components–including civic literary, digital literacy, financial literacy, health literacy, workplace literacy, and more–that help individuals construct knowledge from a variety of sources. At a time when 1 in 3 employers say their employees lack the literacy skills needed to do their jobs, it is vital that children and families have access to programs like family literacy that can help them develop their fundamental literacy skills. 📖 ✨ Join us this month as we discuss multiple literacies and our new resource Navigating the World: Incorporating Multiple Literacies through Family Literacy. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gXk728k6

NCFL staff traveled to Jacksonville, FL, last week to deliver family literacy training for Literacy Alliance of Northeast Florida and several community partners. We're inspired by the community's commitment to multigenerational impact!
Last week, we held a family literacy implementation training with the Literacy Alliance of Northeast Florida in Jacksonville, FL. Literacy Alliance staff and #communitypartners, including representatives from the YMCA, 21st Century Schools, housing authority, and early childhood home visitation, all came together to discuss developing intergenerational programming to support adults, children, programs, and communities. This is #familyliteracy and #partnership in action! National Center for Families Learning

In our recent video highlighting adult education, you met Besse, a family literacy participant who built her skills, wrote her first resume, and—for the first time—helped her daughter with homework. In this month's blog post, NCFL President and CEO Felicia Cumings Smith, Ed.D. returns to Besse's story in the context of recent reports from Capita (in partnership with YouGov) and the Bipartisan Policy Center. Together, their findings highlight the impact of education and employment on family well-being and the challenges families face as they try to access new opportunities. As policymakers work to expand postsecondary pathways, Dr. Smith voices support for evidence-based solutions that set youth and parenting adults up for long-term success. 📖 Read the full post: https://lnkd.in/eZ8FTtiB #FamilyLiteracy #FamilyLearning

As we approach the ✨ three-year anniversary ✨ of Play With Purpose™, we're reflecting on the impact this program has had on families and communities. In an evaluation of the Louisville, KY, playgroup, parents shared that the relationships they had developed not only help them support their child’s learning, but also help them cope with the day-to-day stresses of parenting: https://lnkd.in/erZyx739 This is especially important based on recent national survey of parents that reports 50% of parents have felt down, depressed, or hopeless in the last two weeks.
