About us

Founded by Anna Berbiela Rodriguez, Guillem Casasus and Javier Arizu, —all three former co-founders of design studio Pràctica (2018-2024)—, SMLXL is a full-service design company based in New York and Barcelona. From a large scale visual identity system for a sports event to a small bookstore, from a cover for the New York Times Magazine to Seth Rogen's cannabis Houseplant packaging line, we create projects that influence contemporary visual culture and provide meaning for brands and individuals. While our working method is built upon strategic thinking and contextual research, we recognize that the appeal of truly exceptional projects lies beyond rationality, evoking a sense of wonder that we aim for by encouraging our intuitive and playful sensibility. Our close network of collaborators –each expert in their field– help us expand our production scope if needed, achieving any degree of technical precision a project might require to look its best. We are happy to talk with you anytime. Whether it's for a new project, a collaboration or a portfolio review.

Most premium olive oil bottles are competing with each other on who can look the most refined or have the best squeeze bottle, but D’Arbequina, designed by SMLXL Company, for the Els Batallosos farm in Catalonia is doing something completely its own, wrapping each of its 280 limited edition bottles in a raw black and white motion-sensor camera photograph of the fallow deer that actually live and roam among the olive trees on the property. What are your thoughts on the design? Let us know in the comments.

  • Five years ago, we developed the identity and packaging system for Houseplant. Today, as the brand continues to grow and expand into new territories, it’s great to see how the system still holds—adapting, scaling and evolving across new products and contexts. Shoutout to Kristen Ginn, Bella Rosa and the entire Houseplant team for keeping it tight! SMLXL Company and Principi designed 30 motion-blurred fruit illustrations for the packaging of Magenta’s Fruit Fight card game. The illustrative style captures fruit mid-throw, using digital motion blur effects to create soft, streaked compositions that read as movement and impact. Each of the 30 illustrations comes in three variations, giving every fruit a slightly different shape and trajectory across the deck. Colour serves a dual purpose. Every card combines two tones, one predominant and one secondary, tied to game mechanics where each illustration corresponds to both a number value and a colour. ——— Explore the full case study → https://lnkd.in/gy2azWDN

Celebrating the voices of the Galician seas. UDRA is a secluded creative space in Bueu, Galicia, reimagined as a hub for creativity. The project brings together a music studio and artist residency, a boutique B&B, and a space for cultural events. The identity reflects its coastal context: inspired by the maritime culture of southern Galicia and its deep connection to the Atlantic. A territory where the sea shapes daily life, collective memory, and traditions passed down through generations. At its core, the system draws from the sailor marks of A Guarda: simple geometric symbols historically used as family identifiers. Reinterpreted through a custom typeface, these signs become part of the identity’s typographic language. The art direction plays a key role in grounding the project in its local context, reinforcing the overall intention of the typographic language. A flexible visual language that preserves vernacular heritage while projecting it into a new, global context. This project has been particularly special as we have teamed up with our longtime friend Tiago Campeã. “Els Batallosos” is a small olive farm where fallow deer roam freely among the olive trees. They came to us to design the label for their first production: a limited edition of 280 bottles. The farm has a clear philosophy: minimal intervention, letting nature define each harvest. So we followed the same principle. Their motion-sensor cameras, already installed at the finca to monitor deer movement, were repurposed to capture the images used on the labels. We defined the exact locations — points where the deer interact with the olive trees, where the territory reveals itself most directly. Over three months, they recorded the farm as it is. No staging, no human presence. The images were preserved in their original format and in black and white, reflecting the farm’s zero-intervention philosophy. Every bottle features one of them — a moment in time, and a reminder that no two are the same. 280 bottles. 280 different moments.
