Maya has wanted to be a doctor since she was a little girl. She’s been coming to the SuMa Center in Machhegaun since we opened, sharp, hardworking, full of potential. But when she got her period, everything got harder. Her family couldn’t afford sanitary pads, so she started missing school. Five days a month, every month. She was falling behind and starting to wonder if her dream was even possible. Because of our Keep Girls in School Campaign, Maya now has what she needs to attend every day. Her dream is still alive. But she’s not the only one. We’ve reached 237 girls so far this week. We need to reach 850. That means 613 girls in Machhegaun are still missing school every month, still wondering if their dreams are worth holding onto. A gift of $2.85 provides one girl with supplies for the entire year. One less girl missing school. One more dream still intact. If this resonates with you, we would be grateful if you shared it with your network to help us reach more girls. 💛 https://lnkd.in/gQJrnKAH
About us
Sunsar Maya builds pathways out of poverty by improving the livelihoods of vulnerable children and women through holistic, community-based services. Working in Kathmandu, with a strong network of collaborators, service providers, and local stakeholders, Sunsar Maya operates out of a multi-function community center and currently includes: an after-school tutoring and enrichment program for orphaned and endangered children; women’s literacy classes that build reading, math, and life skills; a women’s trade skills and income generation program; and a library and computer lab resource center for the entire community. These services make up a multi-pronged and sustainable approach to addressing both the short- and long-term needs of a population that suffers from severe social and economic barriers. Our goal is to create a community that breaks the cycle of poverty by investing in and supporting the well-being and success of its most vulnerable members.

On average, girls who menstruate miss five days of school each month because they don’t have access to sanitary pads. That’s nearly 25% of the school year, not because of illness or ability, but because of something as basic as hygiene. It is as outrageous as it sounds. There are 850 girls in Machhegaun at risk of falling behind because of this. But it doesn’t have to be this way. That’s why we launched the Keep Girls in School: Hygiene Kit Campaign. It costs just $2.85 to provide one student with supplies for the entire year. 100% of your gift goes directly to girls in Machhegaun. If you believe periods should only end sentences, not a girl’s future, we invite you to give 💛 If this resonates, we would be grateful if you shared this with your network to help us reach more girls. We need to reach 850 girls by May 10. $14.25 supports 5 girls. $28.50 keeps 10 in school for the year. ✨ https://lnkd.in/gQJrnKAH #nepal #globaleducation #educationforall #righttoeducation #Empowergirls

So much good happened this past year. ✨ We’re excited to share our 2025 Annual Report, a look back at the year and the work that continues to grow. 500 women and children took meaningful steps forward through SuMa’s After School and Women’s Literacy programs. We highlight stories from our community, including Nirmala, who is learning to read and navigate daily life with greater independence. We’re also excited to share more about our newly relaunched Teacher Training Program, expanding our reach by supporting teachers in creating more engaging, student centered classrooms. More than just sharing the report, we want to express our gratitude. None of this happens without our community. We are grateful for each person who is part of what makes this progress possible. If this work resonates with you, we would be grateful if you shared it with your network. Expanding awareness helps us reach more women and children. 💛 View the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gAihNpbf

This is a moment worth protecting. For many of the children in Sunsar Maya’s program, the meal they receive each day is the most nutritious food they will have. It does more than quiet hunger. It helps children focus, feel calm, and stay engaged in their learning. Right now, essential supports like daily meals and weekend nutrition packs are at risk. Not because they are less important, but because funding is down and difficult choices are ahead. This is why awareness matters. When stories like this are shared, more people understand what is at stake and how deeply connected nutrition and education truly are. If this resonates with you, we invite you to share this post with your network. Helping amplify this message ensures more children can continue learning without interruption. For those who are able, gifts are currently being matched through a $30,000 match, doubling their impact. Thank you for helping protect moments like this and for standing with the children and families we serve. 🍚 https://lnkd.in/gQ7batE9

I want to share a quick story about Priyanka, one of the women in our literacy program. Priyanka joined Sunsar Maya hoping to learn to read and write. What she didn’t expect was to receive healthcare, the kind she could never afford elsewhere. During one of her regular checkups, the doctor identified a chronic health condition that needed treatment. Because it was caught early, Priyanka could start treatment and manage her condition at home. And thanks to her literacy classes, she can now read the instructions on her medication, giving her confidence and control over her health for the first time. Thanks to the generosity of those who believe in our mission, women are gaining both literacy and the tools they need to stay healthy and strong for their families. Right now, all gifts to Sunsar Maya are being matched, doubling their impact. With donations down this year, programs like literacy classes and health visits are at risk, even though women like Priyanka rely on them. If this story resonates with you, we invite you to help us spread the word. Sharing this post with your network helps raise awareness of what is possible when education and healthcare are accessible together. And for those who are able, a gift during the match helps ensure this support continues. Thank you for standing with women like Priyanka and for amplifying this work. 💛 https://lnkd.in/gQ7batE9

Which program would you cut? They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this one shows exactly where support for Sunsar Maya goes. 🟧 Core programs 🟦 Wrap around services Together, our community of donors makes both possible. The orange reflects the core educational programming at the heart of SuMa. The teal represents the essential wrap around supports that make our model holistic and effective: • medical and dental care • mental health support • daily meals and weekend nutrition packs • hygiene kits, including sanitary supplies that help girls stay in school • school essentials like backpacks, warm clothing, and shoes Each color in this chart represents care in action, the services that help our students feel safe, nourished, and supported every single day. But here is the difficult reality. Everything in teal is at risk of being paused or eliminated if we don’t close our funding gap this month. And these are the supports our students rely on most. So we are asking a question we never want to ask: Which program would we cut? The truth is, we don’t want to cut any of them. If you believe in holistic, child centered education and care, we would be grateful for your partnership. Every gift this month is being matched, doubling your impact. https://lnkd.in/gQ7batE9 👉 If you can, please share this post to help us reach new partners. Together, we can ensure no child loses access to the support they depend on.

Every child deserves a safe place to learn, a full stomach, and the support to grow with confidence. At Sunsar Maya, we see this coming to life every single day. We see ✨ children crowded around tables, excited to discover something new ✨ students lining up for health checks that bring families peace of mind ✨ kids tucking weekend nutrition packs into their backpacks before heading home These moments are a direct reflection of a community that believes in the power of education, holistic care, and opportunity. Giving Tuesday brought in wonderful support, but we are still working to reach the level of funding needed to keep these essential programs strong. Our matching gift is active throughout the month, which means any support goes twice as far for our students and families. If you believe in this mission, one of the most impactful things you can do today is simply help us spread the word. Sharing our work with your network helps more people learn about Sunsar Maya and the children whose futures are being shaped here. Thank you for standing with us and for helping ensure that every child has access to the learning, care, and safety they deserve. Double your Impact: https://lnkd.in/gQ7batE9

Sunsar Maya is honored to have received a recognition award from Gamvir Setu School in Mahalaxmi Municipality, presented by Nepal’s Interim Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Mr. Jagdish Kharel. This recognition was given in gratitude for our partnership with The Global Uplift Project (TGUP) on the Science Lab in a Box (SLAB) initiative, which brings accessible, low-cost science labs into schools. Through SLAB, students gain practical experience in biology, chemistry, and physics—helping to spark curiosity, expand opportunity, and strengthen education in Nepal. We are grateful for this honor and for our collaboration with TGUP, which continues to show the power of innovative, community-centered development. #globaleducation #educationforall #righttoeducation #internationaldevelopment #Nepal
