About us

At PhonePe, we believe that access to financial services is not a privilege - it’s something every Indian deserves. Since launching in 2016, we’ve grown into one of India’s most trusted fintech platforms - with over 700 million registered users and 50 million merchants across 98% of India’s postal codes. From the busiest metro to the smallest town, PhonePe is where India comes to pay, save, invest, borrow, and protect what matters most. Our ecosystem spans payments, insurance, lending, wealth management, stock broking via Share.Market, and India’s first localised Android app marketplace, Indus App Store. But behind every product is the same simple ambition - to unlock the flow of money for every Indian, on their own terms. Headquartered in Bengaluru

India’s app economy is entering an important new phase, one that is focused on empowerment, creation, and innovation. 🚀✨ In a recent conversation with The Economic Times , our CBO, Priya Narasimhan shares her views on what it will take for India to move from being one of the world’s biggest app-consuming markets to becoming a leader in building digital ecosystems. The discussion goes beyond app distribution and explores a bigger question: what does it take for India to truly shape the future of the digital world? 🌍 It starts with creating ecosystems where developers are not just present, but empowered to grow. It means building platforms that are more open, more inclusive, and designed to support innovation at scale. It also means recognising that trust, regional relevance, and local needs will define the next generation of digital products. At the heart of it all is a larger shift, from being consumers in the global app economy to becoming creators, builders, and decision-makers within it. This is not just about apps. It is about India’s role in shaping the future of technology. Read the full Economic Times feature for more insights, and watch the podcast episode to hear the conversation firsthand. India is the world's number one market for app downloads. And yet, 65-70% of the top 2,000 apps Indians use are built by foreign companies. Indian developers represent just 3-5% of the global developer base. As Priya Narasimhan, Chief Business Officer of Indus Appstore (PhonePe), put it: "We are shoppers. But we are not the shopkeepers in this market." In this interview with ET, Narasimhan unpacks some of the most consequential forces shaping India's digital economy: → Why the current app store duopoly is about structural lock-in through technical bundling → How "scary screens" are used to psychologically deter users from exploring alternatives → Why discoverability in the app ecosystem isn't meritocratic → What data portability, interoperability, and registered app stores actually mean in practice → Why digital sovereignty is the real long-term stakes of this conversation This is a conversation about who controls the doors to India's digital future, and whether India gets to decide that for itself. 🎥 https://lnkd.in/gMgWj5-P #AppEconomy #DigitalIndia #IndusAppstore #DigitalSovereignty #partner

At PhonePe, we have always believed in building for India. India leads the world in app downloads, and the opportunity ahead is to build an app ecosystem that reflects the diversity, languages, and needs of its people. Indus Appstore, our homegrown app store, is one expression of that belief, created to support developers and help shape a more open, inclusive, and developer-friendly app ecosystem for the country. Priya Narasimhan, Chief Business Officer of Indus Appstore by PhonePe, joins The Economic Times to discuss India’s path forward.
