Bruce Booth 2025 Year in Review for the BioPharma Industry is now available. Bruce has been providing key opinions about the state of the industry for well over 10 years now, from the vantage point of a venture partner for Atlas Ventures. To many executives in the industry, Bruce is seen as a prophet of biotech, one that lays out plainly what the landscape looks like, and occasionally foretells what the next year may bring in store. His predictions for the coming year don't always come to pass (you can check every previous Review year on YouTube), but hey, such is the reality in biotech industry. If making bad predictions were punishable by stoning, most people in this field would have an impressive rock-garden at this point. Overall, the picture Bruce paints is relatively bleak for biopharma discovery for all the reasons we already know about. In the review he adds numerical granularity to the analysis that points to concentration of investments targeting later stage assets. The bright spot is that the biotech public markets (XBI etc) are picking up, and M&A continues to drive exits for clinical stage companies. Some key take-aways- Macro and Policy Chaos: The industry navigated considerable uncertainty and "chaos" stemming from broader macroeconomic factors and policy changes. Some key changes should be supported (tax-dodging, on-shoring of critical manufacturing) Rise of Chinese Innovation: The acceleration of innovation emerging from China was a prominent theme, where China and US are nearly equivalent in providing Pharma pipeline assets now. He calls for the US industry to step it up, after showing data that Chinese scientific labor is 1/4th the cost of US labor.... Ubiquity of AI: The transformative force of artificial intelligence (AI) across the biopharma landscape was widely evident, and awaits positive outcome. Indeed, the number of biotech investors have dropped in recent years as more potential investment profits are enticing money into the tech industry. Opportunity in Obesity Therapeutics: The substantial market opportunity in developing treatments for obesity was highlighted as a major area of focus, with an overload of molecules bidding for superiority and best in class. He notices that molecules are "priced to perfection" even as they are in clinical trial stage. In BD jargon this means people are investing assuming that obesity drugs in trials are valued as if the were perfect drugs, instead of accounting for discounts given for net present value. Market Volatility and Resilience: The year was described as a "rollercoaster," beginning with optimism, followed by a spring collapse, and a subsequent enthusiastic rebound. Increased M&A Activity: A significant increase in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity provided a positive tailwind for the sector. Generate Biomedicines is set to raise up to $425 million through its upcoming Nasdaq IPO, with proceeds aimed at advancing its lead asthma drug, GB-0895, through Phase 3 trials. The AI-powered anti-TSLP antibody has been engineered for an extended half-life, promising a long-acting therapy that could be administered only twice a year. The funds will primarily support these pivotal trials, expected to enroll 1,600 patients. Additionally, the IPO will help drive development for other programs, including treatments for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cancer.
