Good news for those who likes the combination of AI and music! Udio, an AI music creation service, has teamed up with Universal Music Group (UMG). Fans will soon be able to create and remix songs using music from major artists, with full permission and clear rules that protect creators. Artists stay in control, and they get paid when their music helps train the AI or powers new creations. There are limits (no downloading or spreading the music outside the platform yet), but Udio and UMG are building tools to make this safe and fair for everyone. Several folks in my group are celebrating their anniversaries this week — many with 7+ years at Airbnb — and multiple are entering or able to enter the Decade Club (10 years!). That’s an incredible milestone. It got me thinking: how do people stay at one place for so long and still feel like they’re growing? Especially in Silicon Valley, where it’s common for people to switch jobs every 3–4 years (or even sooner). I’m personally also staying at Airbnb for many years. Staying doesn’t have to mean standing still. In fact, some of the most meaningful growth comes from evolving inside a familiar environment. I’ve been reflecting on this lately a lot and summarized four ideas that I hope will inspire you: ☀️ Iteration, not repetition Repetition keeps you steady, but iteration keeps you moving forward. Growth comes from improving what you already know — whether that’s experimenting with a new approach, improving existing system, or setting stretch goals with your manager that push you just beyond your comfort zone. Iteration is what turns experience into momentum. Some days you’re inspired, other days you’re not. Instead, create systems that compound over time: operating procedures, checklists, or workflows that make progress repeatable. When challenges come up (and they always do), use them as signals to strengthen your system instead of letting them drain you. The system evolves - and you grow with it. ☀️ Embrace AI One of the best ways to keep growing is to stay curious about how new tools can reshape your industry. For example, AI is opening up opportunities to solve problems in entirely new ways — from tackling hard security challenges to rethinking old workflows. Learning how AI (and other emerging technologies) can apply to your work keeps you not only relevant, but ahead of the curve. ☀️ Practice gratitude — and make your work visible Taking the time to express gratitude to teamates, peers, managers, builds stronger connections and creates a culture where everyone can thrive. At the same time, don’t let your own work go unseen. Share your impact, collaborate openly, and invite feedback. Recognition isn’t about ego — it’s about making sure your contributions set you up for the next cycle of growth. This week, seeing colleagues approach the 10-year milestone reminded me: growth doesn’t always come from changing companies. Amazon taught me that scale amplifies interpretation before it amplifies code. Two teams can read the same requirement and build two different systems, both in good faith. One optimizes for freshness. The other optimizes for consistency. Both think they are serving the same goal. The technical issue only appears later, when the outputs meet and the assumptions collide. That is why I became much more disciplined about forcing clarity early. A shared definition often saves more engineering effort than a shared library.

It's a strategic move with profound implications for the future of engineering leadership. Apple's willingness to outsource a core product experience underscores a fundamental shift: AI expertise is no longer optional; it's a critical competency that you either build or buy, and build fast. Here’s my take: 1) Focus on Architecture, Not Just Models: The value isn't solely in the underlying foundation model. Engineering leaders need to prioritize building a robust, adaptable architecture that can integrate and swap out AI models as the landscape evolves. Think of it like a microservices architecture, but for AI – decoupling the 'brain' from the 'body'. This allows you to stay agile and avoid being locked into a single vendor. 2) The Talent Gap is Real; Prioritize Upskilling: The AI talent pool is fiercely competitive. Rather than trying to poach all the experts, invest in upskilling your existing engineering teams. This means providing training in areas like prompt engineering, model integration, and AI ethics. This is a long term investment, but the payoff is a team that can build and maintain these systems effectively. 3) Don't Over-Engineer at First: Many teams will over-engineer the first versions of an AI-powered product. Get something to market quickly, even if it's not perfect. Learn from real user feedback, and iterate rapidly. AI is a fast-moving field. Overthinking the initial implementation could leave your team behind. I’ve seen teams paralyzed by the complexity of choosing an AI model. They spent months in analysis paralysis. The right approach would have been to start simple, get something working, and then build on that foundation. What are your thoughts? Realizing Buckminster-Fuller's ideas - the Sun as Earth's power supply for AI Google announces a research project Suncatcher, to use solar power in space for AI, versus using Earth's terrestrial stored energy resources. https://lnkd.in/g3xfid_G Buckminster Fuller's book 'Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth' and his talks advised against human use of nuclear and fossil-fuel resources as short term thinking. Fuller viewed renewable energy sources like solar, wind, tide, and water power as the only viable long-term alternatives. He used terms that today may wrinkle noses, except in wise circles such as the Long Now Foundation - fossil fuels as a "cosmic savings account". Fuller believed that there was no "energy crisis," only a "crisis of ignorance," and that a "design revolution" incorporating these sustainable technologies was the solution to humanity's energy problems.
