Here are 2 lessons I tell people entering the profession or start ups. Marketing/PR plans do not need to be longer than 2 pages and job listings should be no longer than 2 paragraphs. 2.5 if there is a lot of technical information necessary. Saying that it's technical and complex tells me you don't understand your own product.

Inside The PRessure Chamber: When the Truth Is Complicated Post-Covid programming has to work harder. If we are asking busy professionals to log in or show up at lunch, it better be worth it. So instead of another panel where everyone nods politely, I wanted to build a room where communicators could feel the heat, think on their feet, connect with each other, and still make it back to their 1:00 meeting. Enter The PRessure Chamber, PRSA Charlotte newest installment. Lunch just got interesting. On February 8 at noon, members stepped into this scenario: A former marketing director, fired three weeks ago, posts a four-minute TikTok alleging discrimination and toxic culture. -Within two hours it hits 50,000 views. -Local media starts calling. -Your CEO is mid-flight and unreachable. -Employees are texting each other. -Your biggest client wants a statement imm life likes complexity: - Some of the allegations are partially true, tied to outdated policies already being fixed -The former employee signed an NDA but is now claiming whistleblower protection -Morale inside the organization is shaky -Reputational risk is climbing by the minute No theoretical “best practices.” Members had to respond in real time. What impressed me most was how quickly the conversation moved beyond panic, (eh maybe not so surprising…it’s a zoom) Here is the truth we landed on: crisis communication gets complicated when parts of the story are true. That is where leadership either grows up or hides. The PRessure Chamber exists to stretch communicators beyond templates and into disciplined thinking. At the end of the session, participants had to answer an uncomfortable question: What in your current crisis plan would not survive this scenario? That reflection alone was worth the hour. After more than 20 years in communications, there’s one thing I still see people misunderstand about this job. The real work often happens before a single word is written. Early in my career, I thought the role was primarily about messaging. But two decades of experience have taught me something very different. The role is not just about what gets said but what gets decided in the rooms where business discussions are taking place. It often looks like this: ➡️ Being the person who asks, “How will this decision look from the outside?” ➡️ Helping leadership see the difference between what makes sense internally and what makes sense publicly ➡️ Connecting the dots between strategy, culture, and stakeholder expectations ➡️ Spotting reputational implications hidden inside operational decisions ➡️ Slowing things down just enough for people to think about consequences ➡️ Asking the uncomfortable question everyone else in the room is quietly avoiding The best communications work is rarely visible. It shows up as a better decision. In a risk avoided. Or a moment that never becomes a headline. Which means some of the most important work in communications is work no one ever sees. Not nearly as dramatic as crisis management. But often far more important.
