Modernize SAP BW: In my previous post, we explored the key features of SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC). Now, let’s take a closer look at how enterprises can modernize their existing SAP BW landscapes.   First lets see 'Why SAP BDC?': 1) Next-Gen Capabilities - Modern data operating model with Business Data Fabric strategy, cloud-native data platform(SaaS), shift to a business data lakehouse architecture, AI/ML models to run directly on operational data(SAP Databricks) and get AI-powered recommendations, unify SAP data with unstructured or semi-structured third-party data, enable real-time modern intuitive analytics and planning, #SAPJoule Just Ask for natural language querying, predefined Intelligent Applications and Data Products. 2) SAP’s Strategic Roadmap - Clear direction towards cloud-based data warehousing, roadmap of including SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud as core components of only SAP BDC and schedule to be remove from the list of Eligible Cloud Services for new BTPEA, CPEA, and PAYG subscriptions as of January 1, 2026. Link: https://lnkd.in/gaiQ7PAP   If above points convince enterprises to choose SAP BDC, now lets see what are the options to modernize existing BW system to SAP BDC.   There are three main modernization paths: 1) Fully migrate to SAP Datasphere core tenant and decommission SAP BW / BW/4HANA(Greenfield and Combination with SAP BW Bridge is possible) 2) Retain SAP BW / BW/4HANA but extend with SAP Datasphere capabilities for a hybrid solution(Leverage SAP BW Bridge Core tenant) 3) Lift SAP BW / BW/4HANA into a SAP Business Data Cloud landscape to use a data source(Embedded approach with Private Cloud Edition without touching core BW logic)   Before deciding on the right approach, enterprises must evaluate their existing BW system and business goals. Key areas to assess to figure out technical complexities:   a) InfoProviders, DSOs, Composite Providers, BW Queries and Data footprint(Redundant data etc.)   b) Custom ABAP exits, transformations and their complexity c) Source systems and integration points (ECC, flat files, third-party apps) d) Usage statistics and performance metrics(Technical content)   Once the current landscape and future analytics goals are clear—alongside SAP’s support timelines (BW 7.x until 2027, BW 7.x PCE until 2030, BW/4HANA & BW/4HANA PCE until 2040)—we can map out the right modernization scenario. Many SAP careers slow down because consultants misread the forces defining seniority, visibility, and relevance. Here are the real causes of stagnation in consulting careers, and how to avoid them: 🤔👇 🌐 SAP demand isn’t universal, it’s skill-specific High demand focuses on S/4HANA, BTP, analytics and industry specialists, not all modules. Many consultants assume “SAP is booming” means they personally sit in a high-demand category. Map your skills to actual demand patterns. ⚙️ ECC experience is no longer a differentiator ECC knowledge is valued, but only as context for upgrades. Customers assess whether you think in S/4HANA terms. Take the time to master and deliberately build S/4, clean-core and analytics fluency now. 🔄 Oversupply in common modules compresses opportunities MM, SD, FI and CO generalists compete in crowded markets with little differentiation. This oversupply drives down visibility and rates. Specialize in a niche or add cross-functional capability for greater opportunities. 🚫 Poor communication implies a lack of seniority Verbosity, jargon and unstructured explanations reduce trust quickly. Customers expect clear, business-focused communication. Practice delivering structured, concise explanations of processes and decisions. 🏗️ Limited exposure to full project phases restricts progression Config-only profiles lack the depth of full-lifecycle experience. Missing design, testing, data and cutover experience blocks senior roles. Proactively request ownership of unfamiliar phases to grow. 📉 Being “busy” seems like being effective Busy consultants complete tasks; effective consultants create measurable improvements. Without impact, seniority cannot be demonstrated. Track, quantify and communicate positive business outcomes that you deliver. 🔍 S/4HANA presence is mistaken for S/4HANA capability Supporting S/4 is not the same as designing or delivering S/4 transformations. Customers look for decisions, not merely familiarity. Acquire extensive transformation experience. 🌱 Avoidance of ambiguity prevents growth Seeking predictable work limits exposure to the challenges that build senior skills. Ambiguity is where consultants level up. Volunteer to resolve unclear problems and cross-functional scenarios. 🏢 Internal environments can restrict development Being sheltered from integration or design work gives false confidence. Long-term comfort leads to minimal skill sets. Rotate responsibilities or seek roles that broaden your exposure. 📣 Low visibility reduces perceived expertise Weak LinkedIn presence conveys outdated skills even when competence is high. Visibility is now part of professional credibility. Publish insights regularly and demonstrate your niche abilities. SAP & ADYEN previews from Mo both pretty much down the fairway – Our SAP preview consistent with the recent messaging from SAP last week at a US competitor conference – Q4 CCB likely 25-26% CCB (street and GIR at the top end) and this is largely dependent of 3 to 4 large deals. With 2026 dependent on the Q4 exit rate –e GSe expecting +24.5% yoy ex-fx growth vs. street at 23.6%. For Adyen Mo looking for a solid Q4 and Ayden to come in at the mid pt of its FY26 guide and reiterate this. After the memory names ripping this year on higher and higher pricing TrendForce now estimated Q1 2026 smartphone and NBPC may need to hike the price or de-spec or lower sales outlook as a result of rising memory prices. SAP's Detective Work: Decoding How the Requirements Type is Determined 🕵️‍♂️ Ever wondered how SAP decides if a sales order should consume a forecast (Make-to-Stock) or trigger a new production order (Make-to-Order)? It all comes down to finding the correct Requirements Type. This is the critical link between a sales order in SD and your entire demand management strategy in PP. Getting it right is everything. SAP has a built-in search strategy to find this crucial piece of information, acting like a detective following a specific set of clues. 🛸The Standard Search Strategy The system checks for the Requirements Type in a strict, hierarchical order. Here's the path it follows: 1. 🔍 Strategy Group: The first and most important place it looks is the Strategy Group in the material master (`MRP 3` view). This is the most direct and recommended method to assign a planning strategy. 2. 📝 MRP Group: If the Strategy Group is blank, the detective moves on to the MRP Group (on the `MRP 1` view). 3. 🧱 Material Type: Still no luck? The system then attempts to find a rule based on the Material Type. 4. 📦 Item Category + MRP Type: As a fallback, it will try to find a match by combining the sales document's Item Category with the material's MRP Type. 5. 🏷️ Item Category Only: If the trail is still cold, a final attempt is made using only the Item Category from the sales document. 6. ❌ Case Closed (No Match): If this final step fails, the system concludes the transaction is not relevant for planning or transfer of requirements. 💪The Exception to the Rule For special business processes like consignment stock movements, the transaction itself is more important than the material's standard plan. In the configuration, you can change the determination 'Source' to prioritize the transaction type, bypassing the material master search entirely. Understanding this search logic is essential for any SD or PP consultant. When a sales order isn't behaving as expected in planning, the culprit is almost always hiding somewhere along this path!
