As someone who works at the intersection of technology and strategy, I’ve been following the conversation around AI governance with growing interest—and urgency. A recent proposal to pause state-level AI regulation for 10 years in favor of a unified federal approach highlights a key tension: the need for consistency vs. the importance of agility and context. While a national framework might reduce fragmentation, it also raises important questions: How do we ensure a centralized model doesn’t become outdated in the face of exponential technological change? How do we preserve local nuance in an era of sweeping digital transformation? Can regulatory structures be adaptive, not just compliant? But there’s another layer we can’t afford to ignore: ethics. As we engineer the future, the why behind AI matters just as much as the how. That’s where the humanities—philosophy, history, sociology, and the arts—play a vital role. They help us ask better questions: Who benefits from this technology? Whose values are being embedded in the code? What unintended consequences might we be overlooking? To create AI that serves society broadly and fairly, we need more than technical governance—we need human insight. What does a regulatory model look like that’s not just scalable—but principled based on human ethics?
