Skilled labor is the bottleneck in industrial ops. Elevāt's platform basically tries to “productize the expert” using machine signals + docs + prior fixes. Now they have $12M to scale. Congrats to them. In industrial AI, the tech is usually the easy part....adoption is the battle. Curious what you think is the real gating factor: -- trust (techs believe it’s right and won’t get them hurt), -- workflow integration (it fits into CMMS/ticketing/parts + works offline/on-device), OR -- incentives (the field team is rewarded for using it vs “just fixing it their way”). Which one kills deployments most often in your experience?

The US defense industrial base has a structural problem that creates opportunity. The issue: • A few number of primes dominate procurement • Cost-plus contracts incentivize rising costs • Thousands of lobbyists maintain the system Promising defense-tech startups die before scaling, crushed by procurement friction they can't navigate. This "valley of death" is where specialist capital can outperform - funds that understand DoD go-to-market and have patience to back companies through the scaling gap.

What makes defense tech so unique and compelling? Committed founders are solving problems they lived on the front lines. Engineers started their careers building complex hardware rather than apps for the optimization economy. A highly connective startup ecosystem aimed to build each other up is quickly maturing before our eyes. And when it's successful, it all benefits our national security. Founders in this sector, whether they served or not, grew up in 20 years of conflict. This has massively shaped why we see so many incredible people investing their time and energy in building technologies that protect us, keep us safer, and expand our horizon as a nation. I was very proud to share my thoughts from the last 10 years for this article with Kaela Roeder of Technical.ly.
