Immediately after Hurricane Mitch in November, 1998, approximately 300 people fled the devastation to find a safer and drier place to live. These people, in hopes of starting again, invaded the land high above the capital city. This rocky, undeveloped area overlooked Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Today, the area houses 60,000 plus people. Still, most people living in the capital city of Tegucigalpa do not even know that this area exists. The people are some of the poorest in Honduras living on $1 a day, yet they live within sight of a prospering city.
We work on the mountain not to change their culture or make them into Americans like us, but to help them develop a lasting and sustaining relationship with Jesus Christ. Then, whether they stay in Mogote or move on, they have everything they need for success. With the help of God and people from all over the world, we will continue to press forward until we see Him in the people of Mogote on the mountain.

• Accelerated scientific discovery in areas such as physics, life science and weather prediction
• Flexibility to serve many projects in parallel and thousands of local and remote researchers
• Power and scalability to serve growing needs for years to come
CHALLENGES
The University “harvests” unused cycles on the nodes purchased by researchers. The system runs a wide variety of research projects and computing applications serving six colleges within USF, including Marine Science, Engineering, Arts & Science, Public Health, Medicine and Business. The most recent addition to the system is a cluster of computers running Intel’s cutting-edge 2.53 Ghz, 6-core microprocessors.
The applications run on the system include everything from low-level physics analysis and molecular
simulations to fluid dynamics and weather modeling. The University is also now installing a data
visualization center, which includes a 50-seat room with an 18-megapixel video wall for viewing 3-D
graphics and video that visually represent huge data sets.
But in the past couple of years, the parallel fi le system has been bursting at the seams with too much data. Majchrzak says his team has been triaging the issue by requiring researchers to more carefully manage their files. “It was approaching the point of becoming an onerous problem,” he says.
Also, storage disks in the older system were starting to fail. Thanks to the alertness and
responsiveness of Majchrzak’s team they were able to mitigate the risk of losing research data, but
data loss had become a constant threat. ”It was creating a lot of management overhead and stress,”
he says. Majchrzak and his staff realized that they needed upgrade to a new parallel file system.Other creatorsSee project -

and storage resources. As each research project requires access to scratch storage for project files
along with archival storage for longer-term data retention, the decision was made to purchase one
large, site-wide fi le system that could be accessed from multiple HPC systems.
SOLUTION
A centralized, high-performance storage solution for Purdue University’s Data Depot service, driven by DDN’s SFA12KX® storage platform with SFX. Additional sites use DDN EXAScaler® parallel file system appliance with SFX® cache acceleration.
RESULTS
• Academic researchers achieve quicker time to results with data inquiry results accelerated by 900%
• SFX dramatically reduces I/O bottlenecks by providing up to 300x more IOPS than rotating media and performs at speeds much closer to RAM
TECHNICAL BENEFITS
• With DDN SFX, nine out of ten random read I/O requests are served from cache, which delivers across-the-board performance improvements
• Handling random data access or reads of millions of small files on dedicated solid-state modules removes the performance penalty on data-intensive storage requests
• DDN’s storage versatility has resulted in the addition of a new EXAScaler appliance to meet the needs of a new compute cluster.Other creatorsSee project -

For perspective, the Dell-based supercomputer is 100 times faster than OU's first supercomputer from 2002, and three times faster than "Sooner" the previous HPC-king on campus.
But what's most important is the type of research Boomer will be involved with, which ranges from weather modeling, molecular dynamics, and even high-energy physics. Henry, who serves as the director of the OU Supercomputing Center, is as excited as the researchers and students who can access it, saying, "... [Boomer] will enhance research capabilities by connecting scientific collaborators throughout the state and nation.”
Finally, Boomer is a part of two other really exciting projects, including OneNet, which is Oklahoma's statewide research, education, and government network, and the Oklahoma PetaStore, which is designed to handle many Petabytes so researchers can better collaborate.

The center enables students to monitor thousands of online conversations about organizations, brands, products and services on a global scale in real time. This allows for more sophisticated review, routing and response to social media posts and content.
“We are early, possibly the first, academic adopters of this technology and approach,” said Clemson Chief Information Officer Jim Bottum.
Bottum learned about a social media listening center during a visit to Dell’s headquarters last year. He proposed a partnership that would involve student engagement, faculty research and an environment to test the value of the center in helping an IT organization move into a more proactive service position.
“When I returned to campus and talked to faculty, students and staff about the Social Media Listening Center, I sensed a very high level of interest and excitement — more so about this project than any other technology we’ve undertaken at Clemson,” Bottum said. “They were from a wide range of disciplines, too, including business, communication studies, psychology, marketing, computing and others. The center is inherently interdisciplinary and focuses on an area where all students and a growing segment of our population lives: social media.” -

Internet2 today announced at the 2014 Internet2 Global Summit the creation of the Internet2 Program Advisory Group for High Performance and Research Computing and the inaugural co-chairs and members. "I'm excited to lead this important venture along with my colleague and friend Dave Lifka," said Jim Bottum, the Group’s Co-Chair and Clemson University’s Chief Information Officer. "As high speed networking, advanced computing, and data movement become more intertwined with cloud applications and services, it becomes increasingly important for Internet2 and its membership to have a role in shaping both the ways in which the technologies are delivered and the support and social interactions on campuses.” "Cloud computing, federated architectures and condo of condos are becoming more important each day," said Dave Lifka, Director of Research Computing and Associate Chief Information Officer at Cornell University. "Given that situation, it's essential that this Advisory Group work closely with the Internet2 community to ensure that advanced network services anticipate the ever growing requirements of our research communities. For example, the Advisory Group will help influence the broad issues discussed at the 2014 Technology Exchange and continue the conversations and ideas expressed." "This distinguished panel drawn from the HPC community will help Internet2 shape and extend its services to more effectively serve data-intensive science and the complex workflows that increasingly characterize much research involving ‘Big Data’ today and in the future,” said Steve Wolff, interim vice president and chief technology officer, Internet2.
