A CRO, CMO, CCO and CPO walk into a bar.... KIDDING! But I would 100% go to a bar with these awesome women. Yesterday I had the fun opportunity to host a panel at the second annual Pavilion's Women Summit with Harini Gokul (CCO at Entrust), Karen Budell (CMO at Totango) and my long-term partner-in-crime Rebecca Price (Partner at Primary Venture Partners and multi-time Chief People Officer). I'll be honest: I loathe panels because I think they tend to be chock full of platitudes and buzzwords about the customer journey. So I told this group we needed to bring the heat and deliver the most action-packed 30 minutes the audience had ever heard. Humble brag moment, but I think we delivered 💁‍♀️ Our message? 90% of executives are unremarkable and highly forgettable. Demonstrating executive presence, hitting your numbers, being data-driven... these traits are the price of ADMISSION, not what differentiate you. So, shocker, we talked about my "Core Four" principles that differentiate the best of the best, but translated them to TACTICAL takeaways for the audience. Some of my favorite nuggets.... 🍕 Take your CFO to lunch! Karen suggests pizza. I've said this before and I'll say it again and again: it's the #1 hack to get up to speed on the P&L quickly and the first step to a lasting cross-functional relationship. 🤝 Pick a secondary sponsor from your executive team for all major initiatives, e.g. Harini talked about the the CHRO as a key partner around AI initiatives given the implication on org design. 🎖️ Know which "First Team" you sit on and intentionally invest time in building those relationships. Rebecca reminded us to invest in the most uncomfortable relationships we have on the team, the people we don't "get." And Harini reminded a room full of GTM leaders that while sales-marketing-CS feels like three-legged stool, you cannot forget the importance of bringing in your Product leader. 💼 An EASY way to align a First Team (beyond comp, of course!) is to rally all of the work around the customer. As I always say, you cannot build enterprise value without customer value. 🚀 You MUST hold AI experiments accountable to top or bottom-line outcomes. 🆘 Know the signs of an unhealthy team: lack of trust, no conflict, struggles to commit, lack of accountability, individuals prioritizing their goals over collective results, the "meeting after the meeting," etc. I already told this group I'll be bringing them on the road to Primary Venture Partners' "On the Business" events!

Truth telling from the best in the game! I love panels when you can walk away with some actionable learnings, and this one delivered in spades. Here are the Core Four that I live by. 1. Influence a P&L, speak CFO language. This gives you a REAL voice at the table. 2. Do the right thing by your "First Team." As a C-Suite leader, look beyond your function, prioritize company success. This is the hardest and most important lesson to learn when you become a C-Suite leader. 3. In an AI first era, stay ahead of customer moves - Make the News, not just report it.
