It’s worth reading AWS RCA on the recent outage The RCA is a great deep dive into how cascading failures can impact multiple services — and how deeply AWS relies on DynamoDB internally. It’s an eye-opener on the importance of resilient architecture design — ensuring that one service failure doesn’t trigger a chain reaction affecting an entire ecosystem or region. AWS published a public RCA for the October 19–20, 2025 service disruption in the Northern Virginia region — one of the most critical AWS hubs. Key points from the incident: 1. DynamoDB DNS Outage Trigger- A latent race condition in DynamoDB’s DNS management system caused multiple redundant DNS Enactors to conflict. This led to the accidental deletion of the Route53 DNS record for the DynamoDB regional endpoint ("dynamodb.us-east-1.amazonaws. com"), wiping out all IP address mappings and making DynamoDB inaccessible to clients and AWS internal services. 2. Cascading Impact on EC2- The Droplet Workflow Manager (DWFM), responsible for managing physical servers (“droplets”) hosting EC2 instances, lost connection to DynamoDB and consequently lost leases with these droplets. Without active leases, new EC2 instance launches failed with errors like “insufficient capacity” despite available underlying hardware. Recovery involved throttling, selective host restarts, and took until early afternoon to restore full launch capability. 3. Network Load Balancer (NLB) Health Check Failures- Network Manager, which propagates network configurations to EC2 instances, experienced backlog due to the prior lease recovery delays. This caused inconsistent health checks by NLB, transiently marking healthy backend nodes as unhealthy and triggering capacity reduction through automatic failover. Mitigation involved disabling failover temporarily to restore service, with full NLB recovery by early afternoon. 4. Other AWS Service Disruptions - Lambda functions faced creation/update failures, invocation errors, and delayed event processing due to dependency on DynamoDB and EC2 recovery timelines. - Elastic Container Service (ECS), Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS), and Fargate experienced container launch failures and scaling delays. - Amazon Connect saw elevated errors handling calls, chats, and cases mostly due to NLB and Lambda issues. - AWS Security Token Service (STS) had intermittent API errors and latencies tied to the DynamoDB issues and subsequent NLB health check delays. - Amazon Redshift query execution and cluster modifications were impaired by DynamoDB outages and EC2 launch blocking due to node replacement workflows being stalled. 5. Recovery Actions and Mitigations- AWS engineers manually restored DNS records and applied temporary mitigations. Gradual recovery occurred across all affected subsystems — DWFM, Network Manager, Lambda, NLB, and others — culminating in full service restoration by late afternoon October 20. Going forward, AWS has disabled the problematic DNS automation globally, introduced velocity controls and additional throttling protections, and enhanced testing to prevent similar future events. https://lnkd.in/g58H2XHu
