If you can’t explain leader election and failover, you’re not ready for distributed system design interviews. Leader election picks ONE coordinator to keep decisions consistent. Know the classics: Bully (highest ID wins), Ring (pass token to find highest), Paxos (consensus under failures/partitions). Failover keeps the service alive when nodes die: Active-Passive (simple, idle standby), Active-Active (shared load, higher availability), Hot Standby (instant takeover, constant sync). Decentralization without accountability won’t scale. Reliability doesn’t happen just because a network is “open.” It happens when performance is measured, comparable, and tied to outcomes. If provider performance isn’t measured, it can’t be rewarded, and conversely it can’t be penalized. That’s when builders and users end up carrying the cost: inconsistent responses, slowdowns under load, and behavior that feels random from the outside. This is why Lava is built around measurable Quality of Service (QoS). Providers are continuously evaluated on real relay performance (latency, availability, freshness, error rate), and traffic is routed accordingly. The result is straightforward: ◾ High-quality providers earn more traffic and better rewards ◾ Underperforming providers are deprioritized until they improve ◾ Teams get more predictable RPC access without babysitting a single endpoint Accountability is what turns decentralized infrastructure into production infrastructure.
