Google has officially begun construction on its data centre development in Kronstorf, marking its first self-built and owned facility in the country. The project will span 42,000 sqm on a 70 hectare site in central Austria, with 29,000 sqm dedicated to data centre space. Planning permission was secured earlier this year, nearly 18 years after the company first purchased the land, with groundwork already underway since at least August 2025. This development also supports Google’s previously announced Austrian cloud region, first outlined in 2022. A key focus of the facility is sustainability. The data centre will be equipped to support off site heat recovery, with plans to provide excess heat free of charge to eligible partners once an offtaker is identified, helping to decarbonise local heat sources. The building will also feature a green roof with solar panels, alongside a broader commitment to replenish more freshwater than it consumes by 2030. As part of this, Google is establishing a fund to support improvements to the local Enns River ecosystem in partnership with the Upper Austrian Fisheries Association. #ai #datacenters #datacentres

In fact, it was one of the initial Google Research experiments that kickstarted our machine learning work. 🔵 The most commonly translated phrase on Google Translate — this month, like almost every month for the past 20 years — was “thank you.” Other top translations include: “How are you?” “I love you,” “Hello,” and “Please.” 🟡 Translate supports 95% of the world’s population and is available in nearly 250 languages. 🔴 More than 1 billion users translate around 1 trillion words every month using Translate — that’s enough text to keep someone reading out loud 24/7 for the next 12,000 years. 🟢 We just launched one of our most requested features: pronunciation practice, which uses AI to analyze your speech and provide instant feedback on your delivery. Now available in the Translate app on Android in the U.S and India, starting with English, Spanish and Hindi. Steven Ford reposted thisSteven Ford reposted thisBack when I was a student taking the Coromandel Express from Chennai up to IIT Kharagpur, we’d always pass through Vizag. I remember it as a quiet, modest coastal city brimming with potential. Today, we’re breaking ground there on our new full-stack AI hub. It’s part of our $15B investment in India’s infrastructure and will house gigawatt-scale compute, a new international subsea cable gateway and clean energy infrastructure. Excited to see this progress benefiting the local community and business ecosystem, bringing jobs and cutting-edge AI to India.

Steven Ford reposted thisSteven Ford reposted thisI am honored to share that I have been recently named President of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA). Over the course of my career, I have had the privilege of serving MCAA in various capacities, including president of MCA Texas, MCA Dallas, and MCA Houston. This role gives me the opportunity to bring priorities close to my heart to a national scale, including expanding contractor education, strengthening the partnership between MCAA and the United Association of Union Plumbers, Fitters, Welders and Service Techs, and advancing skilled trades workforce development. I look forward to drawing on the knowledge and experience I have gained at Southland Industries and through my involvement with MCAA to position our members for what is ahead and provide them with the tools and resources they need to develop the workforce to meet it. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. I look forward to what we can accomplish together. #MCAA #MechanicalConstruction #SouthlandIndustries #ConstructionNews

We’ve done it before – in Australia, in Poland, in Romania, and in Egypt. Alabama is next – and this time it’s for the American Warfighter. In a recent interview, COO and Land Systems President Mike Smith talked about our newest facility in Opelika, AL, where we’ll perform test and integration on the technically superior, rapidly fieldable K9MH. We’re fully committed to giving the US Army the best mobile howitzer on the market. And fully committed to creating good American jobs to get it done. Steven Ford liked thisSteven Ford liked thisIt was an absolute thrill to be back with our partners McLaren Racing and Zak Brown for the Miami Grand Prix yesterday! McLaren Racing achieved Sprint race success and a double-podium with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, scoring the highest total points over the weekend. I was in the pit, checking in with the race team on how Google Gemini is supporting performance on the track. There is nothing quite like the energy of the track – especially when you see technological breakthroughs translate into podium success. But being in the pit with Randeep Singh was equally mindblowing. Randeep is McLaren’s Racing Director and the man behind the strategic calls on track. He invited me onto the pit wall to see it all in action. It was impressive to see how Gemini is helping the team quickly make sense of the huge amounts of data they receive each session (like lap time deltas) to guide critical decisions for qualifying and race setup. The sport has evolved so much since my visit to the Las Vegas Grand Prix last season. Andrea Stella, McLaren’s Team Principal, showed me how Gemini is helping the team keep up with ongoing regulatory changes, especially those implemented between the races in Japan and Miami. He uses a Pixel Fold and showed me how the larger display has made it much easier to review technical graphs while on the move. I recently posted about how Gemini helped me manage jet lag and it was a full-circle moment when Lando told me he was also using our AI to improve his sleep and recovery! With the constant travel and packed schedule, Gemini helps him stay on top of his routine and keep sharp. This weekend was proof that it is not just about having the information. What makes a difference in a sport as complex as Formula 1 is about how quickly you can turn that data into execution. That’s exactly where Google Gemini is making an impact. A huge thank you to the entire McLaren team for your trust and the close collaboration with our Google DeepMind and Google Cloud teams to deliver increased team performance!

It reinforces that our first responsibility is always to the men and women in the field and their well-being. This year’s theme, “All in Together,” reflects that shared responsibility across our industry. At Mortenson, that comes to life through a culture of care built on clear expectations, strong planning, and an environment where every team member is given the ability to speak up and act when something isn’t right and to provide input to make things better. Data center growth has helped the California utility Pacific Gas and Electric Company lower electricity rates four times in two years, according to PG&E CEO Patti Poppe. All told, PG&E has cut rates 11% since 2024, thanks in part to data centers' load growth. PG&E's findings validate recent reports from other utilities and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which show that data centers are paying their own energy costs. Plus, adding data centers to the grid can actually help lower energy costs for other customers. The data center industry remains committed to paying the full cost of service for the energy it uses. We will continue to partner with utilities, grid operators, and policymakers to advance the infrastructure needed for a reliable, affordable grid that supports economic growth for all customers. This point in time in 2028 you will see one data center campus use more power than ALL OF LOS ANGELES. Epoch tracks most of the frontier data center projects that are “known”. Link: https://lnkd.in/gNhJMiZG I believe most of the power is coming from “Methane” and shipped onsite or piped to methane converters. This can be trucked onsite so no need for grid… Water use is lowering as they are circulating water vs bringing in net new for these facilities. The largest project is Microsoft with others from Amazon, Google, Meta, Open AI and X falling short but plenty large. Link: https://lnkd.in/g-n3KRyA Below is how Microsoft is Investing in people. This is the impact on the local community. This facility is a catalyst for economic opportunity. At its peak, we have employed more than 3,000 construction workers during daily peak activity, including electricians, plumbers and pipefitters, carpenters, structural iron and steel workers, concrete workers, and Earth movers. Once our first datacenter is fully operational, we will employ around 500 full-time employees, with that number growing to around 800 once the second datacenter is complete. We are committed to Wisconsin and other communities that host our cutting-edge datacenter, creating hubs for AI innovation where local businesses, nonprofits, students, and workers can all benefit from the growing AI economy. That’s why we partnered in Racine with Gateway Technical College to launch Wisconsin’s first Datacenter Academy, training more than 1,000 students in five years for high-demand datacenter roles. Across the state, Microsoft and more than 40 partners like the United Way, the University of Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Technical College System have worked together and with Gener8tor to train 114,000 people in AI — including 1,400 people living in Racine County. We’ve also sponsored and helped to open the nation’s first manufacturing-focused AI Co-Innovation Lab on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. It results from a partnership with UW-Milwaukee, WEDC, Gateway Technical College, and TitletownTech (a partnership between Microsoft and the Green Bay Packers). The lab has already helped 23 Wisconsin companies — including Regal Rexnord, Renaissant, and BW Converting — turn AI ideas into real solutions. A few of these companies are headquartered right in Racine County, like Wiscon Products, a family-owned precision machining company founded in 1945. Finally, to help more Wisconsinites access the world’s most advanced technology being built in their home state, we’ve expanded broadband access to more than 9,300 rural residents and delivered next-generation service to 1,200 homes and businesses in Sturtevant — bringing faster, more reliable internet to the places where people live, work, and learn. Do you want one in your back yard now?
