I moved to Edinburgh in 2022. A native Cantonese speaker from Hong Kong — and within months, I was helping run a local Cantonese community. That's where I saw the real problem up close. People genuinely wanted to learn Cantonese. Not just heritage learners reconnecting with family. Friends of the community. Partners. People drawn in by the culture, the humour, the sheer expressiveness of the language. The motivation was there. But the materials were working against them. Pick up almost any Cantonese resource and you'll find the same chaos: Yale romanisation mixed with Jyutping, sometimes on the same page. Written Cantonese blended with spoken Cantonese, as though they're the same thing — they're not. Heavy character content aimed at learners who, honestly, just want to hold a conversation with their mates. And Jyutping tone numbers — six tones rendered as digits — which are a genuine nightmare when you're just starting out. Most learners don't need to read a menu in Traditional Chinese. They need to say "sorry I'm late" without freezing up. So I looked at AI. It's 2026. These tools are extraordinary. Surely someone had cracked this. Not quite. After digging into the research and testing what was out there, the picture was clear: most AI Cantonese is unreliable. It still conflates written and spoken forms. The cultural context is thin. Characters appear where romanisation would serve a beginner far better. The AI is capable — but it hasn't been trained to teach spoken Cantonese with any real precision. That's the gap we set out to close. That is a good example why AI will never replace human interpreters. Interpretation is more than just substituting words. It is working with meaning, cultural context, customizing the message for a particular audience, thinking first of all about communication not a string of words. Communication requires adapting, explaining, flexibility, something that AI is not capable of. It requires emotional awareness and intelligence another unreachable goal for AI. The result: dead, bleak, mechanical word substitutions touted as latest technological achievements for the audiences that do not understand the difference.
