As we continue to unveil The Dichotomies of 2026, I had the pleasure of contributing to Cosmetics Business’ forecast on the packaging trends set to define the year ahead. What we’re seeing is a clear reset. After years of maximalism, hyper-bright palettes and layered materials, 2026 is shaping up to be the year packaging reclaims calm, clarity and credibility. A move towards less but better - driven by consumer desire for emotional ease and brand responsibility. In the piece, I spoke about the rise of streamlined materials. After years of over-engineered packs, beauty is shifting to simplicity, with mono-materiality emerging as the new marker of value. This is driving a cleaner aesthetic - matte finishes, neutral tones, industrial honesty. Constraints aren’t limiting creativity, they’re sharpening it. We’re also seeing printed imperfection take hold. A human counterpoint to AI’s perfection, found in raw papers, off-register prints and characterful type as powerful signals of authenticity. This Brand Battle by Designalytics caught my eye. I think Tylenol wins for a few reasons. 1. Tylenol doesn’t split the message into day and night. And thats less to process when you already feel terrible. 2. Cold + Flu are big and bold with a (+) plus sign instead of an ampersand. That instantly signals your brain to think healthcare/medical. 3. The symptom callouts on Tylenol are bold and readable separating them from the drug facts which have a more condensed style. There are so many other factors like color, contrast and how the blocks of information relate to each other. While both brands do a great job, Tylenol came out on top for this one. What are your thoughts? --- P.S. my go to is usually NyQuil when I'm sick. So, no bias here.
