UPDATE: Here's a link to Sara's obituary and information on her service: https://lnkd.in/gD-2vnQm --- This is a difficult personal message, a professional message, and at the end a request for your insight. This is a bit on how effective, empathetic leadership can make a meaningful lasting difference in someone's life, and how you might be able to make a difference for others as well. First, many of the people in my network knew my wife, Sara Christiansen. We worked in technology together, and she was one of the first 10 employees at Berbee, later acquired by CDW. Sara passed away over the weekend after fighting cancer for many years. We're in the process of planning her memorial service. Second, as leaders, we might not always be aware of what our people are going through. You could be seeing someone on the worst day of their life. A difficult personal situation. Loss. A child with an eating disorder. Anxiety. Partner lost their job. Stress. And if you haven't heard of "quiet cracking" yet, read up on it. I am extremely fortunate and grateful to have worked with leaders such as Ruben Chacon and Tara Barbieri over the years that have set fantastic examples of effective, empathetic leadership. Strong emotional intelligence from effective leaders helped me and my family to better handle an extremely difficult situation and made a lifelong impact for us. In order to build cohesive effective teams I genuinely believe that fostering each person's well being is a critical aspect to that success. Investing in people just makes sense in my opinion. Fully realizing potential includes caring about the whole person and not just their output. Being genuine and considerate can also provide the "opening" needed to work through professional and personal issues. Effective leaders focus on getting results AND caring for people. They're not mutually exclusive. As a leader you can make a difference by taking this into consideration. If you don't know where to start, check with your HR department. And make sure it's not just words, your actions need to match what you say. Finally, a request for insight please. Sara was a strong proponent of fostering leadership opportunities in technology for girls and women, encouraging STEM education, and driving equality for women, especially for folks that may be neurodivergent or dealing with various challenges at a young age. Before Sara passed, we discussed establishing a non-profit foundation in her honor that would do three things for girls and women: a) foster learning, b) connect people with opportunities, and c) provide aid for tertiary education. Any recommendations, insights, or resources you might be willing to share would be welcome. This is something we'll continue to develop and I'll be sharing more in the future.
