I remember attending a leadership workshop early in my journey, where I was introduced to Ken Blanchard’s Situational Leadership II model. That’s when I decided to implement it, and it truly transformed the way I lead. ✅ With new team members (D1), I step into a Directing role—offering clear instructions and close supervision. ✅ As they develop (D2), I shift into Coaching—still guiding, but starting to involve them more. ✅ For those gaining confidence (D3), Supporting becomes key—empowering them while being available. ✅ And with top performers (D4), I move into Delegating—trusting them with full ownership. Understanding this model helped me balance directive and supportive behaviors, and more importantly — to lead with intention based on individual needs. Leadership isn’t about control. It’s incredible how many times this simple idea gets lost on District Managers and above. As a store manager for almost two decades, I’ve seen my fair share of good and bad upper management. The ones that truly want you to succeed will understand this sentiment. The ones that don’t, will only ever build the framework for consistantly underperforming stores and a high turnover rate for store managers.
