Way too many merchants focus on redemption count as a measure of discount success. High redemptions could just as easily signal that you are giving away margin on orders that would have happened anyway. Incrementality is key, and in my opinion incremental revenue per user and gross profit per user are your best metrics in most cases. I understand measuring that incrementality is sometimes tricky. A/B tests can be unwieldy, but even just doing a quick pre/post analysis using week-over-week or month-over-month data can work for small(ish) shops.

I still believe people haven’t abandoned the retail experience, especially when it comes to apparel and a more mature audience. For brands that prioritize product over fast fashion trends, relying solely on ecommerce is limiting. Photos don’t tell the full story. Fabric quality, construction, weight, and fit need to be felt, not just seen. Over the past 7 years, working closely with our in house manufacturing partners has allowed us to continuously refine our fabrics and construction to improve durability, performance, and long term wear. Cross-selling doesn’t automatically grow AOV Here’s proof: I audited a Shopify store with 50K+ orders/year They sell niche footwear accessories And they were offering bundles, but only as add-ons (metal tips, lace locks) The result? ✔ 45% of orders were bundles × AOV was stuck at $13.75 The reason: Customers were buying 2-5 items per order, but almost never full sets What the data showed: - Avg. items per order: 2.5 - Common patterns: 2 or 3 colors of the same product - Most frequent combos:  -> black + white  -> sail + pink  -> Jordan 1 + aglets But the site didn’t push bundles actively It didn’t make mixing easy And it didn’t highlight common combos The opportunity? MyTheresa is an interesting and wildly successful ecommerce business. While peers like Farfeched and Matches Fashion have gone bust, they’ve thrived by serving only wealthy customers. “Since becoming CEO in 2015, Michael Kliger has prioritized the top shoppers, who spend upward of $12,000 a year on average with Mytheresa. The process starts with Mytheresa’s algorithms, which predict the customers, mostly women, who are likely to spend the most money over time. If her first purchase is a designer dress rather than a handbag, she uses an American Express Black Card or other premium credit card, and she shops in the evening from an Apple device like an iPhone, there is a greater chance she will turn out to be what Kliger calls a “high repeater.” Then, Mytheresa showers them with perks like invitations to in-person special events, such as a private viewing of a New York City Ballet rehearsal. Exclusive collections from a tightly curated set of designers keep them coming back.” They jettison low spending customers and also merchandise that sells well but isn’t favored by the ‘high repeaters’.  Source: WSJ Of course, it helps to have a good looking 6’ 7” CEO who can lord it over these customers and will them to buy, at their exclusive private events 🙂
