New research from Databricks. It's about training enterprise search agents via RL. KARL introduces a multi-task RL approach where agents are trained across heterogeneous search behaviors, constraint-driven entity search, cross-document synthesis, and tabular reasoning. It generalizes substantially better than those optimized for any single benchmark. KARL is Pareto-optimal on both cost-quality and latency-quality trade-offs compared to Claude 4.6 and GPT 5.2. With sufficient test-time compute, it surpasses the strongest closed models while being more cost efficient.

Semantic metrics Meaning should travel with the data. A semantic layer defines metrics once and makes them portable across tools and teams. The contract is simple. Name, formula, grain, inclusion and exclusion rules, stewardship, and review cadence. Add examples and edge cases so people know how refunds, trials, or credits behave. When the same term means the same thing everywhere, teams argue less and act more. The layer also unlocks reuse. Queries, dashboards, and apps draw from one description of revenue or retention, which shortens build time and reduces drift. The test is plain. If you change a definition, can you see who will be affected and can they see what changed. If yes, you are building a system that supports trust at scale.
