The African Development Bank Group has a dedicated agro-processing facility. The IFC - International Finance Corporation has a food and agribusiness arm. Agence Française de Développement is actively deploying in West Africa right now. On paper? Perfect fits. In practice? You'll spend 18 months in procurement cycles and still get asked for three years of audited financials on a business you're trying to build. DFIs don't say this out loud. They are designed for later-stage capital, not catalytic first position. They want to see operations, not designs. Revenue, not vision. Track record, not potential. That creates a structural mismatch in sequencing when founders arrive at DFIs too early. Then they leave discouraged, thinking the capital doesn't exist for what they're building. It exists. The sequencing was just wrong. DFIs belong in your Tranche 2 or 3 stack — once proof of concept is established, once your first anchor is in, once the numbers are moving. They are validators, not ignitors. So if you're pre-revenue and a DFI rejected you or ghosted you that's not a signal to give up. It's a signal to build your capital architecture correctly from the start. The catalytic capital is out there. It just doesn't live at a DFI. I work with African infrastructure founders to sequence their capital raises correctly so they stop burning time at the wrong doors and start walking through the right ones.

I recently participated in the Foresight on Food Systems Transformation Workshop in Nairobi, a multi-stakeholder dialogue exploring how Kenya can build more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems. The workshop brought together policymakers, researchers, development partners, private sector actors, and practitioners working across agriculture, aquaculture, nutrition, and food policy. Discussions focused on long term food system pathways, emerging risks, and opportunities that will shape Kenya’s food and nutrition landscape in the coming years. A key outcome of the process was the Workshop Report, which captures the insights, priorities, and strategic reflections from the discussions. Three reflections from the workshop stood out: 1️⃣ Stronger coordination across sectors will be critical. Food systems span agriculture, fisheries, nutrition, finance, and policy. 2️⃣ Investment in emerging food sectors, including aquaculture and blue foods, will play an important role in meeting future nutrition demand. 3️⃣ Youth and women participation must remain central to food systems transformation efforts. Food systems change requires collaboration across institutions, disciplines, and value chains. Conversations like these help shape that shared direction. AI is often positioned as the next big solution for food systems, climate resilience, and economic inclusion. And while AI can support transformation, I think we are skipping a critical question: Who closes the foundational gap first? Across Sub-Saharan Africa, over 60% of people live in rural areas, and 70–80% depend on agriculture for their livelihoods (World Bank, FAO). Yet in many rural communities in Nigeria and across Africa: • Internet access is unreliable or nonexistent • Electricity remains a major challenge • Radio is still the most trusted source of information • Many farmers have never used a smartphone So when we say AI will transform communities, we must ask: How do we deploy AI where there is no internet or stable power? This is not a tech question. It is a design question. AI does not have to be internet-facing to be impactful. It can work behind the scenes, supporting extension workers, informing localized radio programs, strengthening cooperatives, and improving decision-making for those closest to communities. Evidence already shows that access to timely, localized information can increase smallholder productivity and incomes by 10–30%, even through low-tech channels like radio or SMS. In this model, farmers may never “use AI” directly, but they benefit from intelligence embedded into trusted systems. The future is not about AI replacing rural people. It is about AI quietly supporting the people who feed us, protect nature, and sustain local economies, often without visibility. If AI is to truly support rural development, it must be designed from the edge, not imported from comfort zones. His post 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾 exposes a painful truth: many well-meaning institutions still confuse the supply side of electrification with real development impact. “$24 million to reduce connection costs for 480,000 clients” sounds impressive….until you ask what those connections will power. The issue isn’t connection costs. It’s that programs still treat electricity as an end, not an enabler. If they looked from the demand side….what rural Ethiopian families actually need to earn, learn, and live, they’d design for livelihoods, not just lights. It’s not children “studying in the dark” that holds us back; it’s the absence of modern education systems, market linkages, and productive-use ecosystems powered by energy. Until institutions can think holistically, they’ll keep playing catch-up. At Mshumality.org, our work focuses on catalyzing partnerships that empower grassroots innovators, particularly in underserved communities like Kibera. We believe that local solutions—when connected to the right networks, tools, and resources—can scale dramatically. My role as a tech specialist is to help bridge the digital divide by integrating technology into community-led initiatives. Through partnerships, we support grassroots organizations to formalize their structures, digitize their operations, access funding, and create dignified, sustainable employment—especially for the youth. In Kibera, I work directly with community changemakers to implement digital tools that optimize waste management, support circular economy innovations, and improve community-based service delivery. Our aim is not just job creation, but dignified work that uplifts individuals and transforms entire neighborhoods. How is AI applied sciences helping Kenya so far? AI is beginning to show promising signs of impact across Kenya—though still at an early stage in grassroots settings. In the health sector, AI is helping predict disease outbreaks and improve diagnostics. In agriculture, AI-powered tools are supporting precision farming and market access for smallholder farmers. In urban areas, we're seeing AI being used for smart transport and waste tracking. At the community level, I’ve seen firsthand how AI tools—like language models and automated design platforms—are empowering youth and grassroots leaders to draft grant proposals, create visual content, and even develop local data dashboards without needing expensive consultants. AI is turning underserved communities from consumers into creators of technology-driven solutions. But this is just the beginning. What does Kenya need to implement in 2025? Kenya needs to prioritize inclusive digital infrastructure and AI literacy at the grassroots level. While policies and tech hubs are growing in urban centers, the same momentum must reach informal settlements. In 2025, we need to implement: 1. Community AI and digital upskilling hubs – Safe spaces where youth can learn and experiment with digital tools and AI to solve real-world problems. 2. Decentralized innovation support – Government and donor-funded incubators should invest directly in grassroots organizations with proven local impact. 3. AI for public services – Kenya can lead by using AI to streamline waste management, healthcare, and climate resilience planning at the community level. 4. Ethical and inclusive AI frameworks – Our deployment of AI must be community-first, with local data ownership and protection at its core.
