Anthropic released a legal plugin for Claude last week. It automates contract review, NDA triage, and compliance workflows - all open-source and customizable to your organization's playbook. I've been testing it out. Here's what stood out: This is foundation work, not a finished product: This handles contract review, but legal teams need approval workflows, version control, e-signatures, and matter management integration. Building that yourself means significant technical resources, ongoing maintenance, and integration work. Yes, it can integrate via MCP, but the difference between this and mature legal operations platforms is established trust, compliance certifications, proven security frameworks, and years of domain expertise baked into workflow design. Legal ops leaders may find that the hidden costs add up quickly. This should worry vendors whose product is Claude wrapped in a nice UI, but end-to-end legal operations platforms with security frameworks, compliance track records, and deep workflow expertise are probably fine. The real opportunity here is what gets built on top of this foundation. I'm genuinely excited to see what in-house legal teams create with this - and how vendors use it as a starting point to build more comprehensive solutions. It may be a new year, but AI, global uncertainty, and regulatory shifts are still primary issues for GCs. If you thought 2026 would be Groundhog Day, California is here to save the day with SB 82! SB 82, effective January 1, 2026, now limits arbitration clauses in consumer agreements to disputes arising under that specific contract. Logical? Absolutely. Defensible? We’ll see. The bill’s proponents cited the example of Disney successfully arguing that a wrongful death claim against its theme park should be arbitrated because the widower, years earlier, signed up for a Disney+ subscription that mandated arbitration. The ensuing debate of the statute’s impact on the FAA will be important to follow (with the argument against SB 82 being that it violates the FAA’s requirement that arbitration agreements be enforced according to their terms and that the FAA preempts any state law singling out arbitration for disfavored treatment). The state is arguing that the bill does not disfavor arbitration itself, instead regulating contract formation and consent (arguing that a consumer cannot meaningfully consent to arbitrate future, unrelated disputes). Is SB 82 an obstacle to the execution of the FAA? Is infinite arbitration reflective of Congress’s objectives with the FAA? These are just some of the important questions at hand. If California’s track record of challenging the FAA is any indicator, the statute could be short-lived. But this Q1, make no doubt about it, many GCs will find themselves having to answer what exposure and risk the new statute places on their businesses.

New York and California are leading the way in AI governance with recent companion model laws, but federal preemption is on the horizon. New York's General Business Law Article 47 (effective November 2025) and California's SB 243 provide robust requirements for AI "companion models"—systems designed to engage users in personal or emotional interactions—ensuring strong disclosure, notification, and user protection standards (effective January 2026). These state laws reflect a growing emphasis on transparency and responsible AI in consumer-facing systems. However, the federal landscape is rapidly evolving: the White House has circulated a draft executive order, "Eliminating State Law Obstruction of National AI Policy," which would block states from enforcing regulations around artificial intelligence, signalling a renewed push for AI deregulation. If adopted, this order would initiate legal challenges against state statutes, restrict federal funding for states with conflicting AI laws, and urge federal agencies to establish uniform disclosure and reporting standards for AI nationwide. Tracking both state initiatives and national policy moves will be key to navigating the future of AI regulation.
