A decade later, he outspoke 30,000 people to become world champion. That's Mohammed Qahtani. Saudi Arabian. Security engineer. And the only Arab in history to win the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking. The journey is wild. He grew up with a severe stutter. Got bullied through childhood. Communication wasn't a weak spot for him. It was a wall. In 2009, a friend suggested Toastmasters. Not to win anything. Just to manage the stutter. What followed was 6 years of speech contests, standup comedy timing work, and rounds of deliberate, painful practice. In 2015, after 7 elimination rounds spanning 6 months, he stood on stage at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in front of 2,500 people. 30,000 competitors from 100+ countries entered. He won. His speech was called 'The Power of Words.' In it, he said: 'I used to be the laughing stock at school. But look at me now.' Since then, he's done 1,000+ speaking engagements across 40 countries. 5 TEDx talks. 9,000 hours on stage. Fortune 500 keynotes. None of that was available to someone who didn't speak until age 6. And yet. He didn't join Toastmasters to win anything. He joined to manage a stutter. The championship was a byproduct of consistency, not a plan. I’m disappointed to hear smart people discussing the hesitation to fire their under-performers. If you’ve trained them and given them resources to succeed and they don’t step up, move on. Don’t hang on to poor-performers. You’re hurting the morale of your top people by tolerating your poor-performer. Give them ample chances to succeed and then move on. Keeping them around for years when you know they shouldn’t be there is bad for your health. And THEIRS. Chances are, it will be a relief for them to find a better fit role somewhere else. Be willing to admit it’s not a fit and move on! Keeping the wrong person in the wrong seat doesn’t make you loyal. It makes you a bad leader.

Work-life balance, however, is a bit tricky. “There’s many things that I claim to know a lot about, and work-life balance is not one of them,” Chesky tells Fortune. “I’m 43 and single, so the best people to answer this question are people with families.” The millennial founder says that while he’s achieved “an excellent work-life balance for a single person,” he doesn’t believe his current lifestyle is conducive to family life. BLS Employment Situation – May 2025 Job Growth: U.S. nonfarm payroll employment increased by 139,000 in May. This marks a slower pace compared to earlier in the year, signaling a cautious labor market as we approach mid-2025. Unemployment: The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.2%, unchanged since May 2024, with 7.2 million people unemployed. This stability suggests the labor market is holding its ground despite broader economic uncertainty. Industry Highlights: Health Care, Leisure & Hospitality, Social Assistance: These sectors continued to see job gains, reflecting ongoing demand for services as the summer season begins. Federal Government: Job losses persisted, continuing a downward trend for this sector. Staffing & Recruiting Industry: The professional and business services sector (which includes staffing and recruiting) saw little change, indicating a plateau in demand for staffing services. Year-to-date, job growth has slowed from the robust gains seen in early 2025, and while demand remains in key sectors like healthcare and hospitality, overall hiring momentum is cooling. ADP National Employment Report – May 2025 Private Sector Hiring: Only 37,000 private sector jobs were added in May, the lowest monthly gain since March 2023 and well below expectations. This sharp slowdown highlights growing employer caution and a significant deceleration from April’s 60,000 new jobs. Wage Growth: Annual pay rose 4.5% year-over-year, showing that wage pressures remain even as hiring slows. Both job-stayers and job-changers continue to see robust pay increases. Let’s examine the key indicators to understand how the economy is performing — and what it means for businesses and consumers alike. 🚀 Employment Momentum January saw solid job growth, with the U.S. economy adding 130,000 jobs, well above consensus expectations and signaling resilience in the labor market. This helped push the unemployment rate down slightly to 4.3 %, indicating continued slack-adjusted stability. 💼 Labor Market Detail • Healthcare, construction, and professional services were among the sectors contributing to the gains, showing demand in both services and investment-related industries. • Revisions to prior months showed lower net gains for 2025 overall, highlighting ongoing structural softness despite the January uptick. ℹ Inflation Trend (CPI) The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January 2026 showed that consumer prices increased by +2.4 % year-over-year, down from 2.7 % in December, marking a notable deceleration in inflation pressures. On a monthly basis, prices rose modestly, with shelter and food contributing more than energy.
