Accessibility is often framed as a compliance requirement. But in practice, it behaves more like a design quality signal. When accessibility is considered early, communication tends to get clearer for everyone. When it’s bolted on late, it often feels like friction instead of support. Good accessibility doesn’t announce itself. It quietly removes effort.

I’ve noticed a troubling trend in the market—PDF remediation and accessibility compliance (ADA / WCAG) being offered at extremely low prices. Let’s be clear: PDF remediation is not a quick or automated task. It requires: ✔ Correct logical reading order ✔ Proper heading structure and nesting ✔ Accurate alt text for images ✔ Table headers and scope ✔ Color contrast compliance ✔ Manual testing with screen readers ✔ Passing Adobe Accessibility Checker and WCAG standards Another serious issue I’m seeing: 👉 One project often has multiple middlemen (mediators)—each taking a cut—while the actual accessibility specialist is expected to deliver expert-level work for a fraction of a fair price. This results in: ❌ Unfair compensation for skilled professionals ❌ Rushed or incomplete compliance ❌ Higher risk of audit failure and legal exposure for clients ❌ A damaged reputation for the accessibility industry Accessibility is about equal access, not shortcuts. Clients deserve real compliance, and accessibility professionals deserve fair pricing and direct collaboration—not a race to the bottom. Mistakes are human. So why do so many interfaces treat them like crimes? User clicked the wrong thing? Page reload. User typed the wrong email? Start over. User pressed back? Data lost. This isn’t UX. This is user punishment. Here’s what great UX does instead: 1. Catches errors early 2. Highlights the fix clearly 3. Saves input progress 4. Lets you undo, retry, recover Design isn’t just about “happy paths.” It’s about handling human ones, too. User errors are part of real use. Design accordingly. Accessibility overlays are often marketed as a quick path to WCAG compliance—but they’re not a complete solution. While overlays and accessibility interfaces can improve surface-level usability, they can’t fix underlying code issues, keyboard navigation gaps, or screen reader compatibility. Courts and accessibility experts continue to reinforce the same message: true WCAG 2.1 AA compliance requires testing, remediation, and ongoing maintenance. 🎨 Contrast rules in accessibility aren’t always one-size-fits-all. Most of us know the standard WCAG requirement: text must meet a 4.5:1 contrast ratio. But did you know there are three important exceptions? 1️⃣ Large text Bigger text is easier to read, so the ratio drops to 3:1. WCAG defines “large” as 18pt+ (or 14pt+ if bold). 2️⃣ Incidental text Certain text doesn’t need to meet contrast requirements at all: Inactive elements (like a disabled button) Purely decorative text Text hidden from everyone (like an invisible skip link) Text that’s part of a larger picture and not essential 3️⃣ Logotypes Brand names and logos (like amazon music) are exempt. 💡 Knowing these exceptions helps you design responsibly without over-correcting.
