Does your mission-critical software have bugs? Some vendors propose a Software Bill Of Materials (SBOM) to know which software components are built into your mission-critical app, and therefore makes component bugs more easily discovered. Even knowing that there are defects in some of the components is not enough: you want to know if those defects affect you and your business. That is a hard question. For example, if a logging component is vulnerable but your configuration for it mitigates all known issues, is it still a defect? This becomes a system-level question, not a component-level problem. Similar issues arise with software components that are present in a system but have buggy features that are not used in the system. Why patch then? We know "zero-defect" software is not going to happen. Even "zero-defect" systems can't be achieved. The answer, I think, will be a mix of dynamic defences and an architectural approach that values resilience, survivability and maintainability.
