I recently watched Satya Nadella's conversation on the Dwarkesh Podcast, and unsurprisingly, he delivered the kind of insight that sticks with you long after the interview ends. Satya has a unique ability to zoom out from the hype cycle and show where the real shifts in technology are taking place. One idea, in particular, stood out.   As agentic AI evolves, we’re not just layering intelligence onto existing tools —we’re beginning to build infrastructure for AI agents. In Satya’s words, “What is the entire substrate underneath that tool that humans use? That entire substrate is the bootstrap for the AI agent as well, because the AI agent needs a computer."   That framing raises important questions for every enterprise. A lot of what we do to support people at work — manage identities, set permissions, store files, monitor systems — will also be needed for AI agents. This new model will become real, but there are places where today’s IT estates simply aren’t designed for what’s coming:   ·      Multi-agent orchestration — We don’t yet have the equivalent of a control plane that can coordinate dozens of autonomous agents working across different models, tasks, and workflows.   ·      Observability at scale — We will need real-time transparency into what each agent did, when, and why, and at a volume that dwarfs people’s activity.   ·      Agent-to-agent communication — Agents will need structured protocols for handoffs, conflict resolution, and collaboration.   ·      Blending people–agent workflows — For a long time, people and agents will work side by side. And infrastructure must support both simultaneously.   ·      Model heterogeneity — Agent ecosystems will rely on a mix of models, including Claude, GPT, Copilot, internal models, and industry-specific models. And they will require identity and security layers that are model-agnostic.   Even as enterprises iron out today’s provisioning issues, the future is coming quickly. IT leaders should start treating agents as another type of user — one that will work with people and gradually handle a growing share of tasks.   The question isn’t if blending people–agent work becomes the norm.
