Stefan Mai Stripe sits between those! While we may have strong priors, there's a culture of pushing the knowledge boundary through novel experiments or by chasing intriguing results. In the paper, we mention the "3DS as a retry strategy" optimization which came about after we were surprised by an experiment's results and dug deeper. We also have experiments of the more rigid kind (e.g. don't regress latency or availability) but the paper and my earlier reply focus on AI/ML experimentation.

Stefan Mai really depends on what we consider "shipped". The most common outcome from a single experiment is we learn more about the problem and use the failure as an opportunity to iterate. With this in mind, most of our experiments end up "shipping" in some capacity (eventually - exact percentage would be hand wavy). As much as we foster a culture of encouraging experimentation, we balance it with an expectation to drive impact. Launching experiments that don't generate learnings, don't have positive outcomes, and don't help us iterate are disincentivized.
