Known for its rigorous academic program, USMMA requires more credit hours for a baccalaureate degree than any other Federal service academy - augmented by a Sea year experience, which affords midshipmen the opportunity to acquire hands-on, real-world experiences aboard working commercial vessels sailing around the world. Here I earn a unique combination of credentials:
- Bachelor of Science degree
- U.S. Coast Guard license, Third Assistant Engineer of Steam & Motor Vessels of any Horsepower
- U.S. Coast Guard license, Third Mate of Steam & Motor Vessels of any Gross Tons Upon Oceans
- Officer’s Commission, U.S. Naval Reserve -

Alumni are eligible only on a multiple of the fifth anniversary of their graduation.
Nominees shall be Regular Members of the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation.
Professional achievement shall be in the candidates chosen profession and, while desirable, need not be restricted to the maritime industry.
Professional achievement should lend honor and prestige to the Academy and to the Alumni Association and Foundation.
Significant professional achievement early in the candidate’s chosen profession is a factor which warrants special consideration
The award may be made to a previous recipient; however, a recommendation in such case shall be made only for extraordinary professional achievement far surpassing those accomplishments for which the first award was originally presented.
While it is desirable that each five-year anniversary class be represented on the final list of approved recipients each year, extreme care shall be exercised to consider all nominees on the basis of their individual professional achievements. No quotas shall be established for each anniversary class and the total number of recipients shall be determined by the criteria set by the Awards Committee.
When insufficient information is not available to fully evaluate a nominee and reason exists to indicate an award may be merited, every effort shall be extended to obtain additional information. No candidate shall be recommended by the Awards Committee to the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association and Foundation for their approval without supporting documentation.

Provide leadership and guidance for AFCEA’s Homeland Security Committee comprised of volunteers from the public and private sectors who help ensure that collaboration, cooperation and communication take place throughout government agencies at all levels. Committee members meet regularly to examine the latest threats to nations and discuss ideas for solutions. Securing the homeland from all possible threats is an impossible task. However, AFCEA’s Homeland Security Committee recognizes that identifying threats and alleviating risks are the first of many steps toward the goal. By keeping the lines of communication open—from industry to law enforcement personnel to federal agency leaders—the committee ensures that the association is accomplishing its mission to ensure an ethical forum for the exchange of ideas. During event-planning sessions, committee members offer ideas and expertise to provide AFCEA with the information it needs to be relevant in a security-conscious environment. In addition, they make their expertise available to AFCEANs worldwide so other nations can address homeland defense issues in their countries. Each year, Homeland Security Committee members are intimately involved in creating the agenda for AFCEA International’s Homeland Security Conference. In addition to determining the most crucial topics to discuss, they seek out the best experts to present a balanced view about both the threats and possible solutions. Other Homeland Security Committee Tasks and Contributions include promoting and supporting AFCEA membership within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security throughout the international community. Support SIGNAL Magazine by encouraging contributions and offering ideas for homeland security-related articles, blogs and interviews.
