In their article, “How Santa Clara Law's ‘Tech Edge JD’ Program Improves the School's Admissions Yield, Diversity, & Employment Outcomes,” published in Vol. 27, Issue 1, Laura Lee Norris and Eric Goldman argue that Santa Clara Law's (SCL) "Tech Edge JD" (TEJD) program effectively enhances the law school's admissions yield, diversity, and employment outcomes. They contend that by focusing on professional skill acquisition through milestones, providing dedicated advising and mentoring, and fostering early professional identity formation, TEJD addresses limitations of traditional legal education and better prepares students for technology law careers. The authors conclude that TEJD has been a success for both SCL and its students, meeting or exceeding expectations on key metrics. They highlight the program's positive impact on admissions, including a higher matriculation rate and increased LSAT scores among admittees, as well as improved racial diversity within the cohorts. Furthermore, they point to the strong academic performance of TEJD students, who achieved higher GPAs than their peers, and impressive employment outcomes, with the first cohort achieving 100% employment within 10 months of graduation. Based on this success, Norris and Goldman suggest that the TEJD model offers a viable roadmap for the future of legal education, emphasizing skill acquisition, early professional development, and individualized student support.
