YourStory: How do you plan to bridge digital divide?
YourStory.in
There is no doubt that throughout the developing world there is a significant technological divide that challenges efforts aimed at promoting equality of opportunity. Because so many of India’s poor do not have access to communication technologies, they remain at the bottom of an unfavorable learning curve, unexposed to the tools practically required to thrive in today’s economy. Interestingly, this lack of understanding or accessibility to technology seems to extend up the base of the pyramid…

Because so many of India’s poor do not have access to communication technologies, they remain at the bottom of an unfavorable learning curve, unexposed to the tools practically required to thrive in today’s economy. Interestingly, this lack of understanding or accessibility to technology seems to extend up the base of the pyramid and affect those who are actually trying to help the underprivileged. Unmesh Sheth, founder of Ektta and President of Silicon Valley based Indians for Collective Action (ICA), made this realization during his time spent with Indian NGOs, trying to find a way that that ICA could work with them to create an impact. But that may be changing as more young professionals decide to get involved.
"Nowadays you see so many young people who want to make an impact, who want to reconnect with their South Asian roots after being brought up in the Bay Area," says Bhupen Mehta. "But changing the mind-set of older people, people in my age group, to give back has been much harder."

Ektta played a major role in understanding the requirements from organization’s point of view and their challenges in implementing new technology.
Ektta worked in partnership with SoPact for about 5-6 weeks to make a connection with EnAble India team in Bangalore. Time devoted to understand their existing system, its challenges, new needs, redefining and crystalizing processes in each department and then building powerful objects on SoPact platform to reflect all the learning. Old data was migrated (that took about 3-4 weeks including testing and verifying) and mapped to see the magical digital views. Some reporting, which used to take hours will take few minutes with a new system. Some of the story that data started telling brought light and surprise to the entire team including founders! Phase I work started in May is still in progress and will go live in September.
