AfroTech 2025: Building Human-Centered Futures in the Age of AI Just returned from AFROTECH 2025, energized by conversations pushing me to think 8-16 years ahead — not just the next quarter. Met so many talented individuals. Five insights for leaders navigating our current moment: 1. Information vs. Redaction As Stacy Abrams noted, organizations shaping our future share knowledge broadly. Our competitive advantage lies in *whose perspectives* inform AI answers. Better personalization comes from richer, more representative voices. 2. "Goals will eat guardrails for breakfast. Baratunde Thurston challenged us on AI adoption with three questions: - **Accelerate**: What should move faster, stay the same, or slow down? - **Augment**: How do we complement the best of humanity? - **Accommodate**: How do we design for those historically excluded? Sustainable innovation *requires* a broad set of perspectives. 3. We're the last generation to manage human-only workforces. Salesforce found 58% of workers adopt AI more readily when they feel included. This isn't soft skills—this is business performance. Success in human-AI teams depends on emotional intelligence, storytelling, creativity, and committing to the collective. 4. From "where we won't go" to "experiences people love." Microsoft's AI CEO reframed governance. Hold power and governance in alignment while creating delightful experiences. Minimizing bias will be table stakes. When super intelligence arrives, what will your people do with their time? Train teams to orchestrate agents, not just use them. 5. AI transparency requires "nutrition labels." NVIDIA introduced Model Card++ — nutrition labels for AI models detailing training data, bias testing, privacy, and safety limitations. If you're deploying AI, ask: Can your team explain what's in your models? Transparency builds trust at scale. The bottom line: Organizations building with broader voices create better products, stronger teams, and more resilient futures. Jidena challenged us to be "myth makers who build worlds." When I talk about technology for good, this is what I mean. Innovation. Access. Ownership. I’m thrilled to see Bonterra’s partnership with AWS take life. As we close out Black History Month, these pieces from my friend and former colleague Eric Morrissette are important and timely reads. The economic pressures and warning signs outlined in the Joint Center's State of the Dream report are not just a February conversation — these are year-round issues that deserve our sustained attention and action. From the report-- "The systematic withdrawal of protections, investments, and accountability mechanisms that have historically assisted Black communities from economic shocks combined with a substantive increase in Black unemployment all point to 2025 as a regression and recession for African Americans. This report is both a warning and a call to action. The question before us is not whether these outcomes are inevitable, but whether we will act—urgently and deliberately—to reverse course before regression hardens into generational losses."
