Your WMS has an API. I promise you it does. The question is whether anyone has ever connected it to your other systems. Most 3PLs are sitting on data they can't access without running manual reports. Some quick thoughts on reading dry van truckload market conditions based on pricing data from DAT Freight & Analytics. Two charts. Thoughts: •The top chart shows dry van truckload spot and contract rates from the trendlines website they maintain, which includes fuel. All-in spot rates are up only $0.02 per mile for March compared with February as of writing, whereas contract rates have risen $0.13 over this period. This suggests an improvement in brokers margins over February and a bit of capacity loosening, though capacity remains tighter than any time in 2025 excluding the second half of December. •The bottom chart shows the implied linehaul rate for spot shipments, assuming $5.00 a gallon diesel fuel. Inferred linehaul has fallen steeply from February because of the massive surge in diesel prices. Almost all of the implied linehaul gain since December has been eliminated. Implication: Given the tight correspondence between year-over-year change in Class 8 new truck orders and linehaul spot rates, I'm expecting March's new orders won't be as impressive as February. Given tremendous geopolitical uncertainty, which is feeding into economic uncertainty given the recent sharp rise in energy prices, it's now a much more open question regarding whether truckload capacity will start increasing in 2026. Most teams want to use AI. But few know where to start. Or how to get past the “cool demo” phase. Especially in supply chain where there seems to be a lot of hype but not a lot of details on the hype (I'm not looking at Auger). Here’s what I've learned as a logistics consultant working with large companies across industries and small start ups: You don’t need a massive transformation project. You need a repeatable toolkit for building AI use cases that deliver real results. I call it the AI Adoption Flywheel, and it works like this: 1️⃣ Identify a single high-value use case. Pick one pain point that’s specific, measurable, and repeatable, like automating spot-bid sourcing or detecting cost leakage in lane awards in logistics procurement. Maybe it's looking for consolidation opportunities for LTL loads on the operations side. 2️⃣ Prototype fast. Build a simple wireframe or workflow mockup using Replit or other vibe coding platforms that can take basic requirements and start building an interface. Use ChatGPT to take all of your requirements, pain points, and ideas to prepare working instructions for Replit. This fast prototype helps validate how users will interact with the AI and what data is actually needed. 3️⃣ Build the data foundation. (This is the most important part) Don’t overengineer. Let me say that again: don't overengineer. Focus only on the datasets required to power the chosen use case. For logistics things like rates, shipments, carrier performance, orders, etc. This will grow once new use cases are developed, so just keep it focused on the immediate task at hand. 4️⃣ Launch a Minimum Viable AI (MVA). Automate just enough to test logic, workflow, and ROI. Some call it user acceptance testing, but start this as soon as you have a working prototype with your data.
