Most people misunderstand what actually makes recruiting hard. I’m a data gal. I love the KPIs, the reporting, the dashboards. That part is fun, and honestly, the easy part for me. The hardest part is the emotional labor. And if you lead a team, it’s doubled. Recruiting asks you to absorb disappointment, manage uncertainty, stay empathetic, and project calm—often for decisions you didn’t make and outcomes you don’t fully control. And still, this is one of the most rewarding jobs I can imagine. You help shape careers, change lives, and build companies from the inside out. If you want great recruiting outcomes, start by respecting the human work it takes to get there.

Surely not overextending your hiring in the first place is preferable, although not always realistic. Finding alternatives to layoffs is critical to continuity and morale. If you must do a RIF, it is vital to take a mindful approach. Those being laid off AND those still employed are impacted, and the care you take makes a difference. Dignity, compassion, clear communication, providing resources, and follow up should be designed into the process.

Something that I've learned in my TA journey- Unfilled roles and mis-hires are quiet profit killers. Talent Acquisition is not a “nice to have” support function—it’s revenue protection and growth. When you reduce time-to-fill, improve quality of hire, and cut wasted spend on tools that don’t perform, you’re directly impacting the bottom line.

TA isn’t just a department. It’s a business lever. Years ago, I thought success in TA meant building great programs and hitting every metric. We had candidate engagement platforms, recruiting pipelines, retention dashboards; all running smoothly. But something was missing. I wasn’t part of the conversations that shaped the company’s future. And I couldn’t figure out why. Then I heard a question from our CEO that changed everything: “If we hire 500 people next quarter, what happens to our margins?” I didn’t have the answer. Not because I lacked skill, but because I was solving for TA outcomes, not business outcomes. That moment reframed my entire approach. Now, every initiative I lead starts with four questions: Is this solving a top business priority? Is it lean and efficient? Does it give us a competitive edge? Will it scale without breaking what works? When I pitch a program today, I don’t talk about time to fill. I talk about cost savings, revenue impact, and strategic advantage. Same work. Different language. And thanks to amazing leaders like Jason Barker, Theodore Bender PhD, MBA and Paul Lopez - a bigger seat at the table. If you’re in TA, here’s the challenge: stop optimizing for TA success. Start optimizing for business success.
