Finns derive satisfaction from leading sustainable lives and perceive financial success as being able to identify and meet basic needs, Arto O. Salonen, a professor at the University of Eastern Finland who has researched well-being in Finnish society, explained. “In other words,” he wrote in an email, “when you know what is enough, you are happy.” The article is more complex than the above. Finns too feel isolation and the pull of a complex world undermining their way of life. But their ethos is of nature, music, and a strong safety net. And no drive for material wealth. We in the US have a lot to learn here. In working with men, a primary cause of depression, addiction, and self-harm is the feeling that they need to "succeed" in some unattainable way as defined explicitly by wealth. It's a hollow and false narrative trap. Even that .1% that "achieves" what our society sets out as the goal know that and get even more depressed. Their is no true joy in getting wealthy and spending shit tons of money on a lavish life style. It's even more hollow and egotistical. Not soulful joy. Tommy Lee, the $2 billion Net Worth original private equity guy, shot himself in the head out of despair. The one thing not explicitly talked about in the article beyond Finnish contentment, is the joy of service. Not sure if it is part of their culture but I suspect it is in some form. The men I work with get happiest when they find some way not only to connect with other men but in fact to help other men. To do service. Our hearts want to feel useful. Useful doesn't mean running some venture capital firm, but actually helping another human being who is suffering. It is called "enlightened self interest" because that heart to heart experience brings so much joy to our own heart. I learned all this the hard way. 25 years of chasing the golden ring only to realize that it was never ever going to work. At 58 I am the happiest I have ever been in my life. I couldn't even tell you how much money I have. But I can tell you the men in my life who have reached out their hands to me and loved me. And the men who I try to do the same for on a daily basis. I honestly spend time here on LinkedIn because I know there are so many men who, like I did for so long, are suffering in silence as they try to "get ahead." Somewhere deep down they know they are on a road leading nowhere. I try to whisper in their ears that there is another way where they already have enough, that they already are enough. The greatest gift you can give someone is the power to be successful. Giving people the opportunity to struggle rather than giving them the things they are struggling for will make them stronger. Compliments are easy to give but they don't help people stretch. Pointing out someone's mistakes and weaknesses (so they learn what they need to deal with) is harder and less appreciated, but much more valuable in the long run. Though new employees will come to appreciate what you are doing, it is typically difficult for them to understand it at first; to be effective, you must clearly and repeatedly explain the logic and the caring behind it. #principleoftheday
