It's like trying to put out a fire With a lighter. You have a negative thought. You judge yourself for having it. And just like that, you're in a downward spiral. I used to hate negative thinking. I thought it was the enemy. But then I learned: Judging your mind for thinking Is like judging your heart for beating. It's simply what it does. Novak Djokovic put it best: "I don't like 'Just think positive thoughts'. It's impossible to do that. You are a human being". Here's what actually works: 1/ Observe your mind thinking Without judgment. 2/ If it helps, You can label it as "Thinking, thinking". 3/ Then bring your attention back to your breath Or another focus. When you do this, Your mind loses momentum And it becomes much easier to reset. And here's the best part: This isn't something you're born with. It's a skill you can improve at. Your packaging IS a placement Here's the tactical principle: Most brands treat packaging as a logistics decision But every time a customer walks out the door holding your bag, box, or sleeve, that's an impression In a real environment At eye level With a human being doing the carrying That's earned media you've already paid for The reason this one works so well: The message is specific enough to provoke but vague enough to travel It doesn't name Amazon bc it doesn't need to Anyone who reads it fills in the blank themselves And because the customer chose to carry it, it doesn't read like an ad It reads like a statement That's the difference between packaging that gets ignored and packaging that gets photographed The question worth asking for your own brand: If someone walked through a crowded place holding your packaging, would anyone notice? Here's one more thing you should bookmark 14 Ways you should differentiate your product (without calling it "better") Check out this masterclass by Scott Jones (follow him!), previously the SVP Marketing at AgentSync, VP PMM at JLL, VP PMM at Medallia through IPO, and now the VP at Commercial Energy. Scott has been launching B2B products for 25 years. The biggest challenge for PMMs? Differentiation. You need to show EXACTLY how you're better. With concrete specific examples. That's why Scott says you need to understand why buyers buy. There are only 4 scenarios that drive B2B purchase decisions from his POV mapped out in this simplified matrix: 1. More for less: Better outcomes, lower investment 2. More for same: Better outcomes, same spend 3. More for more: Better outcomes, higher investment (rare) 4. Same for less: Same outcomes, lower costs You're not competing vs other vendors You're really fighting: Status quo Internal development And they're often much harder to beat. So... Here's how to prove you're actually "better" Every claim needs THREE elements: 1. Defendable adjectives with metrics 2. Clear "from/to" state 3. Demonstrable capabilities The gold standard? "New and never achieved" Example: "First platform to fully automate account targeting, media execution, and paid optimization in real time" Some of Scott's favs include: - More actionable - More comprehensive - More responsive - More compliant - More accurate - More predictable But if you're selling enterprise, you're going to need to bring in a lot more of the relevant points that matter to upmarket buyers like these signals: - Steering committee sign off - Multiple management layers - CFO approval Your differentiation must tie to financial outcomes like: "Company X reduced spend from $5M to $4M" "Company Y grew topline 15% YoY" TLDR for you PMMs Stop saying you're "better Start proving it with: 1.
