Thrilled to share a major milestone for board leadership and AI governance! In today’s fast-evolving landscape, AI fluency isn’t just a “nice-to-have” for boards—it’s a strategic imperative. Directors must understand not only the opportunities AI offers but also the risks, ethical responsibilities, and oversight practices required to guide leadership and protect stakeholder value. I’m excited to highlight the launch of the Effective AI Oversight for Directors Certificate Program by the NACD (National Association of Corporate Directors)—a timely and strategic learning path designed to equip corporate directors with essential frameworks, tools, and confidence to govern AI responsibly. This 10-module, 22-hour certificate program—offered in partnership with Executive Education at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College—delivers foundational knowledge in AI technologies, data strategy, risk oversight, ethical governance, and digital transformation tailored for the boardroom. I’m especially proud to be part of this collaboration alongside my work with the Carnegie Mellon University - #Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy’s Chief Data & AI Officer (CDAIO) certificate program, which shares a mission close to my heart: building AI fluency and strategic leadership capabilities across organizational and governance teams. Last week I attended several US federal AI and health events organized by Potomac Officers Club, American Council for Technology - Industry Advisory Council (ACT-IAC) and GovExec. The biggest shift I observed? Federal agencies are no longer asking “Should we use AI?” They are asking “How do we scale AI responsibly, without breaking trust?” A few consistent themes stood out: 1️⃣ AI is no longer experimental, it’s becoming infrastructure. It’s being embedded into help desks, research workflows, documentation, analytics, and modernization efforts. 2️⃣ AI success is fundamentally a data question. Not a model question. Not a hype question. Leaders repeatedly emphasized that performance, trust, and adoption all depend on the quality, provenance, and interoperability of underlying data. “Garbage in, garbage out” wasn’t theoretical, it was operational reality. 3️⃣ Interoperability is still the bottleneck. Agencies don’t lack data. They lack connected, standardized, identity-aware systems. Interoperability doesn’t happen by accident. 4️⃣ Governance is not slowing AI down, it’s enabling it. Responsible AI is less about restriction and more about transparency, explainability, and measurable outcomes. 5️⃣ Workforce enablement may be the real differentiator. The agencies seeing the most impact are embedding AI into workflows and pairing it with training, not just deploying tools. What struck me most is this: ⛔ Federal leaders are not looking for “more AI.” ✅ They’re looking for AI they can trust, grounded in authoritative data, integrated into real workflows, and aligned to mission outcomes. The hype cycle is over. The infrastructure phase has begun. Curious to hear how others are seeing this shift, especially across public sector environments.

One of the biggest misconceptions in government contracting is that contractors can replace the federal workforce. They cannot. Having spent most of my career in the federal contracting space — first as an employee and later as the founder and president of a company supporting federal agencies — I’ve seen firsthand how fragile continuity can become when institutional knowledge and workforce capacity are disrupted. Those experiences have shaped how I think about resilience in government. In my commentary for Federal News Network, “Building a resilient federal government takes partnerships,” I share why maintaining mission continuity during times of disruption requires thoughtful collaboration between federal agencies and trusted contractors. Federal employees carry institutional knowledge and mission ownership that are essential to government operations. When that knowledge base is disrupted, the impacts often surface months or even years later — in delayed programs, slowed acquisitions, and increased operational risk. But when structured properly, contractor partnerships can play an important role in supporting agencies during periods of transition — helping stabilize programs, absorb surge demand, and maintain momentum while agencies navigate change. This isn’t just a contracting issue. It’s a national resilience issue. When federal missions are disrupted, the effects ultimately reach the communities, industries, and citizens who depend on those programs. Having spent so many years in this space, I believe strongly that the future of effective government lies in partnerships that respect the unique role of the federal workforce while strengthening mission delivery. Many customers in the Federal space have complex disparate data across focus areas. Decisions are driven based on combining data sources, and making those decisions at the data level can help drive faster and more accurate answers for downstream applications and LLMs. In this blog post, Seth M. explores how "data gravity"—the increasing difficulty and cost of moving large datasets—exacerbates challenges, where applying complex business rules often leads to latency and infrastructure strain. To counter this, the Seth highlights an integrated approach using Corticon.js for decision authoring and MarkLogic as a data hub. Corticon.js empowers business analysts to build decision logic via intuitive tools like Corticon.js Studio: defining vocabularies from schemas, crafting rulesheets for conditional logic, sequencing via ruleflows, and validating with ruletests. This compiles into portable JavaScript for seamless deployment. MarkLogic complements this by ingesting data through Flux and triggering inline evaluations on document arrival, enriching records with decisions, audit messages, and traces—without any data movement. This preserves lineage, boosts throughput, and ensures a single source of truth. Key benefits include transparent, auditable decisions for compliance; reduced costs from eliminating data transfers; and enhanced efficiency for sectors like public programs (e.g., automating eligibility and claims). For LLMs and apps, an explainability dashboard visualizes policies and traces, while an AI-in-the-loop chatbot leverages Retrieval-Augmented Generation from MarkLogic to deliver grounded, context-rich responses.
