November 2024, my co-founder Çağlar Bozkurt and I were deep in a space tech brainstorm when we stumbled on something unexpected: proteins are routinely sent into space. Why? Because microgravity helps grow purer, larger crystals—crucial for understanding protein structures in drug development. But it’s expensive. Launching to the ISS can cost €15,000–€20,000 per kg, and failed crystallization runs often wait 6–12 months for re-flight. Only ~20% of space-grown trials outperform Earth-based ones. That insight led us to build „Project Newton“, our early attempt to bring AI into protein engineering even in microgravity conditions. It eventually became the foundation for Orbion. Today, we’ve come full circle: we just applied as an consortium to an European Space Agency - ESA // ESA BSGN | Business in Space Growth Network grant program involved this very issue.
