Space IPOs are Back in Orbit Firefly Aerospace’s IPO is another signal that the U.S. IPO market is shaking off three years of dormancy. The Texas-based space company raised $868 million, pricing above its range and selling more shares than planned- clear indicators of strong institutional appetite. Investors are buying into two powerful themes here: space and defense. With a NASA-funded Blue Ghost lander already on the lunar surface, three more missions ahead, a $1.1 billion launch backlog, and partnerships with names like Northrop Grumman, Firefly has a bold roadmap. From my vantage point, this IPO highlights two important market dynamics. First, the return of investor demand for high-growth, high-risk plays in specialized sectors, a notable change from the caution that defined recent years. Second, the deal structure shows that when companies understand market sentiment and position accordingly, they can still achieve exceptional outcomes. There is a strong and growing pipeline that’s as diverse as it is ambitious, spanning fintech, AI, and now, renewed confidence in space exploration. The real test for Firefly will be execution. But its debut is a reminder of why I believe the public markets still reward companies with vision, resilience, and the ability to capture investor imagination.

We are grateful to KXAN for chatting with our VP and Co-founder Dr. Leon Vanstone this week about jobs in space - and why Texas is now pivotal in the global sector. Some highlights: ➡️ Space companies are flocking to Texas and with them comes jobs. A recent report from the Space Workforce Incubator for Texas (SWIFT) revealed that over the next 10 years, 100,000 new jobs will be created as the aerospace industry expands. ➡️ The Space Economy Jobs Report, published this October, explores how Texas can better ready for this future. ➡️ According to the report, the global space industry will be worth over $1.8 trillion by 2035. Vanstone compares the growing industry to the early age of the internet, where programmers were in desperate need but the supply was lacking. ➡️ Jobs in the space industry pay better than most jobs too. The average salary for the job postings studied was $143,000. The jobs that didn’t require a college degree paid on average $76,000. This is one-and-a-half times the national average. 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀. 💥 Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered sweeping reforms to establish "UAS domain dominance by 2027," treating small drones as expendable, consumable assets rather than high-value aircraft. This massive policy shift is designed to prioritize speed and a commercial-first mindset over bureaucracy. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: This acceleration creates a critical security paradox. While speed is essential, relying on a diverse base of commercial vendors creates 𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 and greater risk of fraud, abuse, and compromised components. The Pentagon must enforce security without slowing down production. To manage this, the DoD is building a "𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰, 𝗔𝗜-𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁" that retains all component and supply chain findings.
