Ahuva Hoberman posted thisUPDATE: Figma reached out and issued a full refund ($2,520) for the inactive seats — appreciate the quick response and resolution. They also mentioned they’re working on improvements to the seat model — curious to see how that rolls out in practice. ----- Figma YOU HAVE SOME EXPLAINING TO DO. I found out I’ve been paying for multiple seats for OVER A YEAR. Apparently, if someone requests edit access to your file, and you grant it - FIGMA ADDS IT AS A PAID SEAT TO YOUR ACCOUNT. Which is absolutely crazy because that person is already paying for their OWN Figma subscription. Was it silly of me to assume it works like Google Docs? Maybe. BUT they don’t ask. They don’t notify you. There is no confirmation. They just add another user to your subscription. This is straight up predatory practice. I did some digging and I am far from the first person this has happened to. So. Apparently I've been paying for 8 seats this whole time. Each seat costs $16/month. I went back through all my invoices, and I've overpaid by around $2,500. Could I have been checking my statements more closely? Maybe, but you know how it is. We've all paid for random subscriptions without realizing. (Gym membership, I'm looking at you.) Best part? When they (finally) answered me ten minutes ago, they gave me a refund of $150. On a $2,500 overcharge. So this is me offering (free) advice: Guys, check your statements. Seriously. And more importantly, please reshare this and tag Figma. I want this loud enough that they actually deal with it.

Because lately? It’s giving neural sweatshop. Me, typing prompts into one robot while another spits out a vibe-checked render, and a third one tells me the lighting is “off.” Cool cool cool. I used to design things. Like…with ideas? And hands? Now I’m a semi-sentient prompt gremlin babysitting AI thought spirals and adjusting the temperature on synthetic creativity like it’s a smart oven. (Yes, a robot helped me write this. No, I don’t know who I am anymore. Yes, I’m still the one adding the ✨sparkle✨.) WHAT ARE WE EVEN DOING.

Me: "Um that's nice, but it's the middle of the night. You need to go back to sleep." "OK so can I take a ‘rest’?" And with that, she climbs into my bed next to me. I reminded her she's not supposed to sleep in Mommy's bed. "Yeah but I'm a little girl! It's very hard for me." And she rolled over and went to sleep. (Very contently, I might add.) She's 4 and she already knows: if the first message doesn't work, reframe it. Same product. Different language. She got what she wanted. Good branding starts with understanding what *your clients* need to hear. Not what you want to say. Designers are stuck. We’ve been told color is just about picking what “looks good.” But the reality? Most brand palettes aren’t built, they’re improvised. Why? Because everything is blending. Your “signature red” looks like your competitor’s. Your “calming blue” feels like every bank in the world. Your “trendy gradient” is gone as fast as the algorithm shifts. And it gets worse. 🚫 Contrast isn’t balanced. 🚫 Accessibility is ignored. 🚫 Color meanings are misapplied. 🚫 Designers end up defending "vibes" instead of systems. Ever felt boxed in? Client says, “Just make it pop.” Translation: abandon strategy, chase random colors. Here’s the contradiction. Brands need consistency, yet most don’t even have rules for how their palette works across print or web. Ridiculous. I talk with designers daily who are ditching the “pick and pray” method and building structured systems instead: ✅ 60/30/10 layouts. ✅ Token maps. ✅ Contrast ratios. ✅ Color stories tied to identity, not trends. That’s the shift. And I hope it’s the start of a bigger movement where brands stop guessing and start owning their visual voice. If you constantly get: Low-paying clients Vague briefs Disrespectful negotiations Random collaborations It’s not bad luck. It’s positioning. The market responds to how you present yourself. - If your page screams “available for anything,” you’ll get anything. - If your work looks inconsistent, you’ll attract inconsistent opportunities. - If your messaging is unclear, serious brands won’t take the risk. Here’s how to fix it: • Define the type of work you want — publicly • Showcase projects that reflect that direction • Speak to the level you want to operate at • Stop saying yes to everything You train the market how to treat you. Opportunities are mirrors. If you don’t like what you’re seeing, refine the signal.

I learned this the hard way early in my career. Most agencies don’t lose clients because of “bad design”. They lose them because delivery drags on for weeks. And when delivery slows down, clients don’t wait. They leave. Here’s the best practice that changed everything for me: • Treat speed as a value, not an afterthought • Build processes that reduce friction, not add to it • Remove unnecessary revisions before they pile up • Communicate fast, even when the work isn’t done yet • Deliver earlier than promised whenever possible Speed isn’t rushing the work.
