Why are you leaving?” Employee: “I’ve received a new job offer with a 65% salary increase, and there’s also a guaranteed annual raise based on performance.” 48 hours later… Boss: “We’ll also give you a 95% raise—just don’t leave!” Employee: “Sorry, it’s too late now.” Lesson for Leaders: Employees don’t leave only because of money—they leave when they feel undervalued or unappreciated. Retaining good employees isn’t just about increasing their pay; it requires recognition, growth opportunities, and proactive leadership. Take care of your best employees— before they decide to leave you.

Then, they stop caring about outcomes. Then, they stop seeing a future with you. And by the time they actually leave? You think it was “unexpected.” It wasn’t. You just missed the signals. Here’s what really pushes great people out: Not pressure. Not workload. 👉 It’s feeling invisible. Invisible when they go the extra mile. Invisible when they solve problems no one else sees. Invisible when their growth is treated like an afterthought. And the dangerous part? They don’t complain. They don’t create drama. They simply… disconnect. Because high performers don’t beg to be valued. They go where they are. The best leaders understand this: Retention isn’t about perks. It’s about presence. Do you: • Notice effort before results? • Create space for people to grow? • Make them feel seen—even when things are busy? The days are long, but the weeks are flying by! I’ve been slowly mastering my new role as president of milk production, and especially love the perks of unlimited contact naps. Co-managing a team of 2 littles is proving to have some learning curves, but our KPIs have been all on-point this month nonetheless. 😜 Looking forward to the next 10 weeks of snuggles before returing from maternity leave!

I'm following up on yesterday's post: “A 2025 Perspective on Bridging the Aerospace Talent Gap.” 🧠 Today, I’m diving deeper into the core issues and solutions. This isn't theory—it's drawn from lived experience as a Pilot & Systems Engineer with 20+ years managing critical systems across aerospace and subsea. Few can say they’ve had final sign-off on U.S. Shuttle Systems (including STS-114 Boom Inspection) and led multimillion-dollar subsea programs in the Gulf of Mexico. That cross-industry lens has shown me both the strengths—and gaps—in how we build engineering teams. Here’s the paradox: Engineers are trained to think, solve, lead, and adapt—not just check boxes. High-performing teams bring a 360-view across design, quality, reliability, and safety. And good systems leaders know how to avoid analysis paralysis—and when to say “no,” even when it’s unpopular. I recall a particularly tough subsea design review in London. I told the room of skeptical chief engineers, “No need to order lunch; I think I may be the main course.” Three days later, after intense scrutiny, the client's chief engineer finally said: “This bloke is correct.” We weren’t perfect—we were prepared. That project helped launch careers, including a teammate now at #SpaceX. So, why do we still struggle to find—or retain—talent? Often, it’s not a talent shortage. It’s a visibility problem. Rigid job descriptions and over-filtering by pedigree cause us to miss great engineers—those with grit, cross-discipline experience, and field-tested leadership. Sometimes, your best hire isn’t from a top-tier school—it’s someone who's weathered tough programs and still shows up strong. After that London review, I didn’t hear back for a month. Then, I ran into a regional manager who said: “Ervin, I was on a plane with the VP of Company X. He said that young Technical Manager held his own in a room full of sharks.” Moments like that define careers—and teams. From spaceflight systems to subsea controls, I’ve seen what real talent looks like. We need leaders willing to recognize it—even when it comes in nontraditional packages. What’s the difference between a Senior Technical Writer and a Technical Publications Manager? It’s not just title. It’s scope. A Senior Technical Writer improves capability. They: • Lead complex documentation efforts • Define standards and structure • Mentor other writers • Strengthen process • Elevate documentation from task to function They still write but they also shape how writing happens. A Technical Publications Manager builds and directs the system. They: • Hire and develop talent • Allocate resources • Set priorities across programs • Align documentation with business strategy • Own performance and long-term direction They may not write daily but they’re accountable for the health of the function. Here’s the clean distinction: A Senior Technical Writer strengthens the craft. A Technical Publications Manager strengthens the organization around the craft. Both are leadership roles. One leads through expertise. The other leads through structure and people.

Today, I learned that somewhere deep inside a program office… a Program Manager believes my entire job is “doing change management.” That’s it. That’s the tweet. That’s the job description. Apparently, I just sit at my desk all day like: 📝 “Ah yes, another change. Let me gently shepherd this through a mystical CCB while chanting ECP numbers into the void.” Meanwhile, in reality… Configuration Management is apparently invisible when it’s working, but VERY noticeable when it’s gone. Funny how that works. Because sure, Change Management is part of what I do. Just like oxygen is part of breathing. But let’s recap what CM also magically includes (but somehow doesn’t count): 🔹 Establishing and defending baselines like they’re national treasures 🔹 Making sure “latest_final_v7_REAL_FINAL.xlsx” isn’t flying hardware 🔹 Preventing undocumented engineering “optimizations” from quietly becoming production features 🔹 Translating engineer, PM, contracts, and customer dialects into one shared reality 🔹 Being the adult in the room when scope creep shows up wearing a trench coat 🔹 Keeping audits boring (you’re welcome) 🔹 Ensuring the digital thread doesn’t become digital spaghetti But yes. I just “do change.” That’s like saying a fighter pilot just “turns left sometimes.” So here’s to Configuration Managers everywhere - Working tirelessly behind the scenes, Holding the line between order and absolute programmatic chaos, And being remembered only when someone asks: “Wait… who approved this?” Happy Monday, fellow keepers of the baseline. 🍻 #ConfigurationManagement #ProgramReality #BaselinesMatter #CMIsNotJustChange #TrustButVerify

When it comes to the priority of emphasizing product design into government/military applications & softwares, there’s a lot of talk in DC about the need to improve it, hire more experts, create policy around it. Pay no attention to what is being said, look at the actions. If it was a serious matter you’d see it in the actions. Now is the best time for designers to become private consultants. AI will not be the easy fix like many think. Govtech views design as a quick fix rather than an ongoing requirement…at least for now.

🧩People are the building blocks to project management. Because of that, your mental health isn’t optional. Deadlines, multiple projects with different customers, changing requirements, and constant problem-solving can overload you. If we ignore mental health, we don’t just burn out people (or ourselves)… we burn out projects. Healthy teams: Communicate more efficiently. Make better and more sound decisions. Resolve conflict in a productive manner. Recover faster from issues or mistakes. Stay engaged and grow together for the long term. Great PMs don’t just manage schedules and scope… they manage capacity, morale, and sustainability. A burned-out team doesn’t deliver efficiently… they just deliver less frequently and at a higher cost. Taking care of your people is taking care of your project.

"Everyone's a teacher. Some teach you what to do, some teach you what not to do, but everyone's a teacher." - Grandma Sarah Jo Yesterday was International Women's Day, and LinkedIn asked me the question below. I don't normally respond to things like this, but I thought this one was good. My grandma, a former high school counselor and teacher, has played an outsized role in not just my career but my approach to life in general. From an early age, she taught me the value of curiosity, coachability, and humility. Always eager to help others, she instilled a sense of purpose and authenticity in me. And as a single mother who raised two kids while pursuing a challenging, sacrificial career in education, she showed me what it means to work hard. In high school, she continuously "hired" me to do odd jobs--clean the garden, take down a tree, seal the driveway, reinforce the shed, and so on. I loved doing those tasks, but now I can see how those days were proving grounds for tenacity and figure-it-out-ability. Today, she still plays a large role in my life. She pours out love and has fun with me and my own daughter. She may not have a large garden that needs tending or a fence that needs mending anymore, but she still carries the same light and encouragement. So now I'll ask you: Who is a woman who’s made an impact on your career? #IWD26

Nobody throws a party when the Project Manager walks in. (Unless it’s the launch party—then we planned it.) And that’s okay. Because we’re the ones who: → Ask the uncomfortable questions that make people squirm → Push back on “We need it yesterday” timelines → Say “no” when everyone else nods along → Deliver the updates nobody wants but everybody needs → Turn meetings from chaos into actual progress We’re not in it for the high-fives or free donuts (okay… maybe the donuts). We’re in it to get things done—properly, clearly, and on time. If everyone always loves their PM, that PM might be more mascot than manager. Real project management isn’t about being popular. It’s about being relentlessly reliable. So when you feel those eye-rolls coming your way, smile. That’s just the sound of progress rubbing people the wrong way. Ahmed Mabrouk Ali

PSA: Fake Recruiter Alert on LinkedIn I was recently contacted with a job opportunity (via a public comment to a post of mine) by someone claiming to be a director at Leidos. After connecting, however, I noticed several red flags: - Their profile had only one connection (likely just me). - Their first direct message to me was copied and pasted, identical to the one left publicly as a comment. - The “HR contact” provided was a Gmail address, clearly not a corporate email. - Their profile was filled with generic buzzwords and even placeholder text (e.g. "[X] years of experience"). - All their posts were reposts of company content, with no interaction or detail. This was clearly a phishing attempt, and I’ve reported and blocked the account. If you receive similar messages, even from profiles that seem impressive at first glance, take a moment to verify. Trust your instincts, and don’t hesitate to ask for a second opinion. It’s easy to be caught off guard, especially if you’re actively job hunting or open to new opportunities.
