Byron Deeter is a leading investor in Cloud, AI, Frontier Technology, and the Business of Sports. He co-authored Bessemer’s iconic 10 Laws of Cloud Computing, the Bessemer Forbes Cloud 100, the BVP Nasdaq Emerging Cloud Index, and Bessemer’s STRIVE program for executive health and wellness. Byron works closely alongside many of the best founders in the cloud world, with 26 of Byron’s investments currently valued above $1 billion each, including 13 IPOs and counting.
Byron first raised a Series A with Bessemer back in 2000, as CEO and founder of Trigo Technologies. His company grew to be one of the first global SaaS companies, reaching profitability and was successfully sold to IBM. Byron foresaw that cloud computing would not only change the way people built new technologies but also how The Cloud would systematically run the world. In 2005, Byron returned to Bessemer, this time to help lead the firm’s global cloud practice.
Byron graduated with honors from The University of California, Berkeley, where he met his then college sweetheart and now wife. Byron is a perennial Midas List investor, past Chairman of the National Venture Capital Association, partner/owner of the San Francisco 49ers and Leeds United, as well as an active board member/advisor to numerous causes including the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Foundation, U.C. Berkeley Foundation, Pledge 1% and Cal Rugby. Although he’s a four-time Rugby Collegiate National Champion and serial Ironman finisher, he’s largely converted to leisure sports of golf, wake surfing, and skiing with his wife and three children.

The conversations in that room were exactly what this industry needs more of. From how AI is reshaping the investor lens to what it really takes to scale a vertical business in 2026, the energy and candor from our speakers and attendees was special. I loved getting to dig into vertical SaaS trends with Byron Deeter from BVP and David Yuan from Tidemark , two people who have seen more vertical SaaS journeys than almost anyone. A few interesting insights that stuck with me: - AI leadership starts at the top. David made it clear, if your CTO isn't actively pushing into AI, that's a conversation you need to have. You need a strong, convicted voice driving your AI strategy internally. - Your customers want agentic solutions from you. They're not looking elsewhere, they want their SaaS platform provider to deliver products that actually help them do their jobs. The opportunity is right in front of us. - Find your moats. Vertical SaaS can achieve this through nuances of their industry, or by offering capital or monetization opportunities for their customers. Safe to say, we are just getting started. When the seven cofounders started the company, we wanted to honor our roots in PyTorch; torch carries the fire. We want the fire of AI to serve people everywhere. Today, we process 30 trillion tokens a day, the biggest inference provider outside of the frontier labs’ APIs. We got to this impact by relentlessly defining what frontier inference is. Here's the simplest way I can explain what ClickHouse does: imagine asking a question about every transaction your company has ever processed and getting the answer before you finish reading this sentence. That's ClickHouse. I sat down with CEO Aaron Katz and VP of Product Tanya Bragin to tell the ClickHouse story... because once you understand what they've built, the opportunity becomes impossible to ignore. I believe this is a generational company that will (continue to) power the leading AI businesses. My biggest takeaway from my conversation w/ Aaron & Tanya: Every company in the world is rearchitecting around AI. But ClickHouse is what AI is architecting around. As Aaron put it: "Most infrastructure companies were designed before the emergence of agentic systems. These legacy platforms simply weren't designed to meet the volume, concurrency, and dynamic load these AI workloads demand. ClickHouse was designed for this moment." I've been an investor since the Series C, and I wanted to write a piece that explains the massive opportunity ahead — and what they've actually built — in plain English. Byron Deeter reacted on thisAfter much development and with the help of many, today Marc Holmes and I are pleased to share what we’ve been working on together: Dome Systems https://domesystems.ai We spent time deeply immersed into the AI ecosystem – the VC community, with AI platform leaders, hands-on with the implications of AI-native practices, and observing the patterns they see. I’ve been privileged to see a few platform transitions in my time, but this one is moving faster than anything that preceded it. One lesson of platform transitions is that they occur at the application layer first: developers are always quick to take advantage of new capabilities. And then as the patterns begin to stabilize, it then takes some time for the underlying infrastructure gaps to materialize. Now is that moment as the foundational elements are clear. 1) AI Agents introduce a new application paradigm Simply stated: traditional applications follow instructions – when invoked, they will take the same deterministic execution path each time. By governing access, it is possible to govern behavior. By contrast, agents pursue goals: when invoked, they will take a probabilistic path to achieve the goal they have been given. Ask a second time, and they may well follow a different path. Access controls and traditional constraints therefore are important but insufficient. 2) There are multiple categories of agents The average enterprise is seeing an explosion of agentic adoption across multiple categories of agent types: from developer productivity through a new breed of agentic SaaS products, to internal enterprise systems being built for this era on cloud and data platforms. Each of these has varying and inconsistent mechanisms to enforce control. 3) Enterprise tension: adoption vs control Enterprises are keen to adopt agents across all categories, security and operations teams are understandably concerned about security and compliance. This is the same tension created in the cloud platform transition and we’re seeing it again: the eagerness of business units, the friction introduced by operations and security requirements preventing adoption. 4) A new AI-native infrastructure platform is required That is what catalyzed us to create Dome Systems. Our mission: to provide a consistent system of control for the enterprise agentic estate. Enabling platform engineering teams to green-light AI adoption while addressing the foundational concerns of operations and security. A new infrastructure layer, again. Built AI-native, unburdened form the legacies of prior technological eras. We have been working with a number of enterprises in the lead-up to this moment, and can’t wait for you to take a look. Congratulations to David McJannet, Marc Holmes, and the entire Dome Systems team! As enterprises rapidly deploy agents across cloud platforms, data systems, and SaaS tools, there’s not a consistent way to govern and secure what’s being built. We’re hearing from CISOs and enterprise leaders that today feels like the “wild west.” Dome Systems builds the infrastructure layer that sits above the entire agentic estate, regardless of which LLMs or agent frameworks developers are using. This gives security and ops teams the visibility and policy controls they need to let AI actually work inside the enterprise. We are grateful for our longstanding relationship with Dave and Marc. When Dave ran HashiCorp, we had a front-row seat to how he operates: his humility, first-principles thinking, and systems-level approach kept the company one step ahead of challenges. When most people hear "solid-state," they think storage. But in Santa Clara, xMEMS Labs just gave that term new resonance, literally. The company just raised $21M in Series D funding led by Boardman Bay Capital Management, with Cloudview Capital, CDIB-TEN Capital, Harbinger Ventures, Susquehanna Asia Venture Capital, and other strategic investors tuning in. This isn't another round of capital, it's an #amplifier for a company turning silicon into a new language of #sound and #cooling for the AI era. Founded in 2018 by Joseph Jiang and Jemm Liang, xMEMS spun out of piezoelectric R&D at TSMC and turned what was once wafer-level theory into commercial hardware. Joseph Jiang, a veteran of Knowles, Fortemedia, and InvenSense, leads with precision and swagger, while Jemm Liang, who built Ultrachip from the ground up, drives the engineering with surgical focus. Co-Founder & CLO Wei-Fu Hsu, the former MediaTek exec and IP expert, ensures xMEMS' innovation is as protected as it is disruptive. Their play? A monolithic MEMS platform that transforms voltage into vibration, silicon into sound. Unlike legacy coil speakers and fans, xMEMS tech doesn't move parts, it moves markets. Over 500K MEMS speakers shipped in 1H'24, backed by >250 global patents. The Cypress & Sycamore lines redefine what "small" can do: 1mm-thin, full-range, and capable of sub-bass response once thought impossible in earbuds. Their XMC-2400 µCooling chip, 1mm-thin, fan-on-a-chip, inaudible, moves 39cc/sec of air at just 30mW. That's not cooling, that's choreography at a molecular level. Dr. Chester Hwang, named CTO on Oct 15, 2025, joins to push that curve further. Alongside veterans Mike Housholder (VP Marketing & Biz Dev), Jim Wargnier (VP N.A. & EU Sales), James Lee (VP & Korea GM), Steven P. Bentley (VP Sales), and Martin Lim (VP MEMS Tech), xMEMS is scaling at semiconductor speed. Voice is a super interesting modality right now - maybe the first modality we're seeing move to open source models across a number of scale ups / enterprises. Reliability concerns, high costs, and open source model performance are pushing engineers to do their own fine tuning vs. relying on third-party vendors of proprietary models. Many of these orgs have already been collecting their own first-party data and now with third-party vendors like Extrian, David AI, etc they can train really high quality models. RL has been insanely hyped, but it's been unclear how long it will take scale ups and enterprises to actually lean in. Voice AI might be hitting that inflection point faster than expected.

Project Vend reads less like a capability story and more like a governability story. Phase two improved because institutional scaffolding (tools, procedures, role separation) reduced predictable judgment failures—persuasion, compliance blind spots, boundary confusion, values drift. The board-level question isn’t “can an agent run a business?” but “what governance primitives must exist before we delegate authority.” Until incentives, escalation rights, and refusal boundaries are structurally enforced—not merely prompted—agents remain high-performing managers, not autonomous executives.

Skilled labor is the bottleneck in industrial ops. Elevāt's platform basically tries to “productize the expert” using machine signals + docs + prior fixes. Now they have $12M to scale. Congrats to them. In industrial AI, the tech is usually the easy part....adoption is the battle. Curious what you think is the real gating factor: -- trust (techs believe it’s right and won’t get them hurt), -- workflow integration (it fits into CMMS/ticketing/parts + works offline/on-device), OR -- incentives (the field team is rewarded for using it vs “just fixing it their way”). Which one kills deployments most often in your experience?

On-Prem is the New Cloud: Why Enterprises are Reversing Stance in the Age of AI Remember when cloud was the battleground for innovation, agility, and scale? Everyone was tracking the % of on-prem compute moving to the cloud and it was growing every year? Well now there’s a reversal. The reality today? On-prem is the new cloud. Here’s why. AI’s Dark Side: Legal Risk and Data Governance Headaches Enterprises are excited about AI, but also uneasy as vendors like OpenAI face intensifying legal pressure. In a high-stakes lawsuit, a judge ordered OpenAI to preserve all ChatGPT chats (even deleted ones), overriding its 30-day deletion policy. Imagine that: you delete sensitive conversations, but they’re still sucked into legal limbo. The precedent is clear: AI prompts and outputs are discoverable records, demanding integration into enterprise ESI (Electronic Stored Information) policies. For large organizations handling sensitive data, the risk is simple: you can’t afford your AI tools to turn into legal liabilities. Especially when global regulations (GDPR, etc.) and internal governance collide with unpredictably broad discovery orders. Sovereignty, Control, Trust Many enterprises still ban ChatGPT or impose strict rules on usage. Even when allowed, token limits are throttled. Enterprises are cautiously letting AI in (as they should). Enterprises need to have control and trust. SAP is leaning into this with its Sovereign Cloud On-Site, deployable on customer premises with SAP-managed infrastructure. It is built to deliver data, operational, technical, and legal sovereignty in one package. Doubt it will be the last. Scaling Pains Talking to founders, three reasons stand out why cloud isn’t scaling with AI: 1/ The rate at which AWS/GCP lets you provision compute and the compute it wants you to provision both falter as AI and AI driven developers deploy a lot more code more frequently than before. So sometimes it’s not about data governance, but actually about performance and functionality. 2/ Shadow AI is rampant—employees paste sensitive info into models despite restrictions—creating demand for better permissioning tools. 3/ Data leakage remains a live risk, like the August 2025 Grok incident where hundreds of thousands of private chats became publicly accessible and indexed. One thing is for sure - founders selling into the enterprise are scaling faster if they offer the ability to run on-prem. The Future is Hybrid Don’t get me wrong - cloud is not going anywhere. But neither is on prem. A few years agoI thought we were headed for a full cloud shift, but now I think the future is truly hybrid.
