Barkoff · Enterprise Technology Sales · #EdgeAI #AI #PublicSector At the recent Dell Technologies Federal Symposium, Michael Dell made a point that every enterprise and government technology leader should write down: edge computing is where AI operations are headed, and on-device inference is going to fundamentally change the economics. He's right. And if you've been in this industry long enough, you've watched this exact story play out once before, with cloud. The cloud cost story, condensed Cast your mind back to the mid-2000s. Organizations were sprinting toward cloud adoption, seduced by the promise of infinite scalability and zero up-front capital. And for a while, it delivered. But then the bills arrived. Egress fees. Data transfer costs. The quiet accumulation of idle compute and storage that nobody turned off. What started as a cost-reduction play quietly became one of the largest and least-scrutinized line items on the IT budget. FinOps wasn't even a word until enterprises were already deep in the hole. The lesson, eventually learned, was this: proximity to data matters, and moving data at scale is expensive. "The lesson cloud taught us is that moving data at scale is expensive. AI at the edge is the industry's answer to not making that same mistake twice." Now apply that lens to AI Today's AI workloads are generating enormous volumes of data at the point of origin: sensors, cameras, vehicles, public safety systems, permitting platforms, utility infrastructure. The current default for most organizations is to send that data to centralized cloud or data center environments for inference. It works. But the cost and latency profile looks uncomfortably familiar. Every round-trip to a centralized model costs bandwidth. In real-time use cases, it costs latency that operations simply cannot absorb. In bandwidth-constrained environments like remote government facilities, field operations, or disconnected edge sites, it can cost mission continuity entirely.... It's probably a bit overdone on this platform by now, But that doesn't make it any less useful for founders. It was foundational in helping me build and scale multiple 8-figure companies. Clear's message is simple (but genuinely effective): Success isn't about big leaps or moments of "inspiration." It's about small, consistent actions that compound over time. In other words: Success = Systems × Consistency × Time First, start with The Habit Loop (The 4 Laws Of Behaviour Change) This will help you build and break habits. Cue: Make it obvious Craving: Make it attractive Response: Make it easy Reward: Make it satisfying (For the full breakdown, see the sheet 👇) Here are other key takeaways from the book: 1. Tiny changes, big impact Small 1% improvements compound faster than you think. 2. Identity-based habits win Focus on who you want to become, not just what you want to achieve. 3. A human engineer defines the target state (e.g. the desired architecture or language) and oversees the process, but the heavy lifting is handled by AI. Tedious tasks such as converting thousands of code files, applying repetitive syntax changes, or generating boilerplate code and unit tests can be handled by AI in a fraction of the time. These tools speed up projects and reduce the risk of human error and oversight costs. They can catch subtle dependencies or inconsistencies that a manual approach might miss, thanks to their ability to analyze complex codebases far faster than a human. In short, AI migration tools are redefining how legacy software is modernized, moving from a time-consuming manual process to faster, more precise collaboration between developers and their AI “teammates”.

Plan review isn’t a clerical task. It’s a judgment-heavy, safety-critical process with real consequences, and no AI model today (or anytime soon) can take on that responsibility. The real question is: How can AI help reviewers apply their judgment more effectively? Not by speeding up reviews at the cost of confidence. Not by chasing automation that leads to more rework. But by removing the friction points that get in the way of high-quality review.
