Everyone is rushing to learn AI tools. Claude Code. Cursor. MCP integrations. A Carnegie Mellon math professor just told them they're all preparing for the wrong thing. He coached the US Math Olympiad team. He watches AI solve problems that stump the world's best mathematical minds. And when he was asked what skill will matter most when AI handles most of the work — He didn't say technical literacy. He didn't say adaptability. He said: The ability to genuinely want something better for the person in front of you. Not as a moral virtue. As a survival strategy. Because the future is humans building trust-based partnerships to solve what AI can't navigate alone. And people will only partner with you if they truly believe you care about their outcome. You can't fake it. They'll know. And you become useless. The shift that changes everything: -From outdoing people, to delighting them. -From solving problems, to seeing them through someone else's eyes. -From individual performance, to networks built on genuine trust. I've spent my whole career serving customers of all segments — retail, enterprise, service providers, SMB, government... you name it. Across every single one of those worlds, we called this "soft skills" and treated it as secondary to everything else. We had it completely backwards. It was the whole game. It always was. Excellent perspective from Jeetu Patel at Cisco. The point about trust is particularly important. One dimension that I believe deserves even more attention is the difference in speed between machines and humans. AI systems operate at machine speed, while governance, decision making, and oversight still largely happen at human speed. That gap creates a completely new category of risk. When AI systems are connected to critical infrastructure, financial systems, or core operational platforms, even a small error, misalignment, or manipulation can propagate at machine scale and in milliseconds. Humans often only realize what happened after the system has already executed thousands or millions of actions. That is why trust, guardrails, and strong oversight are so critical. The real challenge is not only building powerful AI systems but designing governance models that can keep pace with machine speed. As Professor Suraj Srinivasan from Harvard Business School recently put it: “the faster the car, the better the brakes needed”
