Ever wondered why compliance courses feel like box-checking? I’m unpacking the 5 biggest design mistakes (based on my personal experience) in a 2-part series. 👉 Sharing the first 2 mistakes today — stay tuned, I’ll reveal the remaining 3 tomorrow. In my recent poll, Instructional Designers ranked “Creativity vs. Compliance” as the 3rd biggest challenge they are facing today. And it’s no surprise. 2 of the 5 mistakes that make compliance courses dull — and how to fix them with creativity (without losing compliance). 📌 Mistake #1: Treating It Like a Legal Document The Problem: Compliance courses often read like law firm memos — jargon-heavy, passive, and overwhelming. Fix It: Write like you’re talking to a colleague. Use active voice, plain language, and break down complex ideas with visuals or examples. Example: Replace “Non-compliance may result in punitive action", with “Breaking this rule could cost your job — and your company’s reputation”. 📌 Mistake #2: Missing the "Why" The Problem: Learners are told what to do — but not why it matters. Without relevance, compliance becomes checkbox behavior. Fix It: Connect policies to real-world consequences. Use brief stories, frontline examples, or headlines to make it stick. Example: You can say, “If Ahmed had followed this procedure, the data breach could’ve been prevented.” ✨ I’ll be back with the remaining 3 mistakes (and fixes) tomorrow. The most compelling evidence yet that AI isn’t eliminating Instructional Design expertise - it’s elevating it. Three recent job descriptions provide perhaps the most reliable glimpse yet of where the Instructional Design role & profession is headed. These new "AI-first" roles have a few things in common: → Prompt Engineering Skills: Instructional Designers are responsible for designing and building prompt libraries to "scale ADDIE" → Agentic Workflow Design: Instructional Designers are required to build agents capable of things like content drafting, feedback delivery & support triage → Intelligent Content Operations: Instructional Designers are expected to build machine-readable asset libraries to enable dynamic content curation & reuse → Strategic Leadership: Instructional Designers are expected to create AI principles for Instructional Design & to contribute to organisation-level AI strategy, ops & governance → Salary Uplift: The reward for AI-leaning roles is on average ~40% higher than traditional roles, suggesting that AI increases rather than decreases the perceived business value of the Instructional Designer Bottom line: AI isn’t eliminating traditional Instructional Design expertise, but it is reshuffling the value stack. Reducing Time to Value with Instructional Motion Design. Bad onboarding is the #1 reason for early churn. Users don't leave because your product is bad. They leave because they don't understand it fast enough. Time to Value is everything. THE PROBLEM: Traditional onboarding relies on: - Lengthy tooltips - Static step by step guides - Text heavy tutorials Users skip them. THE SOLUTION: Motion Design. Instructional animations: - Highlight clickable elements with subtle pulses - Show drag and drop interactions with visual cues - Confirm actions with micro feedback (checkmarks, transitions) RESULT: Motion reduces cognitive load and accelerates learning. Users who complete motion-guided onboarding have 30% higher retention at Day 7. Stop making users read. Show them with motion.
