Radically different worlds. We’re choosing right now. Most people just don’t know it yet, but I aim at Solarpunk with everything I create.

Matthew Williamson heeft dit geplaatstI was sitting in a small cafe this morning when I overheard a loud conversation at a nearby table. A salesperson was pitching AI to someone: “Reduce your overhead by 60%.” “Massive explosion in profit.” “Think about how many employees you could eliminate.” I might not have thought much of it, except I’d eaten at the same cafe Monday morning. Same guy. Same script. Different person across the table. The same rehearsed fantasy delivered to two different people who were being treated as interchangeable audiences for a performance about making other people interchangeable. Gross. There’s something wrong with an AI value proposition that begins and ends with elimination. Elimination of cost. Elimination of headcount. Elimination of the people who built the thing you’re now trying to “optimize.” Augment HR with AI, don't replace the humans. Make Accounting better, don't replace the humans. Help devs increase their speed, don't replace the humans. I’ve spent years working at the intersection of AI and business. I run a software company. I’m building AI products. I teach workshops on working with AI. I am not a skeptic… I’m a believer. And I’m telling you that the “eliminate your employees” pitch is not just morally bankrupt. It’s bad strategy. The companies that will win with AI are the ones that understand something this salesperson never will… that your people aren’t overhead. They carry institutional knowledge, customer relationships, judgment built from years of pattern recognition that no model can replicate overnight. When you “eliminate” them, you don’t just lose salary line items. You lose capability. You lose context. You lose the very thing that makes your business defensible. So if someone sits down across from you and opens with how many people you can get rid of… ask yourself what they’re really selling. Because it isn’t your future. It’s theirs. P.S. I had dinner Monday night and I struck up a conversation with a photographer who was working the room. This very nice photographer is using AI in his work. Not to replace himself. Not to eliminate anything. To get better at what he already does. That’s the whole point, sitting right there at the table… and nobody had to pitch him on it.
