David L Sampson, from New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) reckons that scholarly publishers are better at publishing data than at storytelling, during a panel discussion in front of a room full of science publishing executives at the STM meeting today in Frankfurt. NEJM had recently engaged with an influencer called Dr Glaucomflecken, an Americal comedian, podcaster and ophthalmologist, whose real name is Will Flanary, to produce YouTube videos. https://lnkd.in/e7FXvwjS These short-form videos have been very well received, positionning NEJM as a "cool journal" while effectively sharing accurate medical information. Mutiplying channels to engage, by including YouTube or TikTok videos, is a good way to engage beyond the medical community, particularly with medical students and wider society. This content helps raise brand awareness for the New England Journal of Medicine, at the top of the funnel, while establishing an early relationship with future doctors and clinicians. This is a proof of concept approach to collaborate with digital influencers in.medicine, which could be adopted by Pharma companies to collaborate with HCPs and KOLs, and co-create content that is proven to engage.

Kickbacks from Pharma to prescibing clinicians are illegal, but they still happen. There are $$ penalties, but do they really work to disincentive anyone? A recent review in JAMA found that "pharmaceutical manufacturers penalized for kickbacks paid only 2.2% of US revenue accrued from selling implicated drugs during years of alleged violations." [2000-2025] An aside: I noticed Johnson & Johnson was not on the list, so they are one of the few companies who have never been fined for kickbacks.
