Today, I attended a meeting of the Riverside County Land Conservation Working Group. Around the table were experts—hydrologists, planners, conservationists—each with years of experience and deep knowledge of the local landscape. They discussed challenges that maps often fail to capture: sheet-flow rivers that don’t appear in standard datasets, city annexations that overlook natural boundaries, and soil subsidence that’s frequently ignored in planning decisions. Despite their expertise and shared mission, there was no effective way to integrate their collective knowledge into a single, interactive system to support better decision-making. This is a familiar story in geospatial work. We have more data and technology than ever—satellites, sensors, AI—yet our tools still struggle to bring together the complexity of nature and the wisdom of those who know it best. Life in rural Timor-Leste is shaped by fragile infrastructure, the legacy of conflict, and a climate that is becoming harder to predict. These pressures fall heaviest on the poorest families: three quarters of rural households live below the poverty line, food insecurity is widespread, and almost half of children under five experience stunting. For people with disabilities, the barriers are even higher. Disability rates in rural areas are twice as high as in towns, and mobility impairments often make it difficult to reach farmland, markets or essential services. Yet many continue to farm and contribute to their communities. To help change this, the Australian Government funded TOMAK programme, delivered by ASI with the local organisation Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan (RHTO), is working to make rural development genuinely inclusive. https://lnkd.in/epbnTX_i
